Tom Waits - [Another Man's Vine]--- I keep forgetting to relate the thing the was the largest blow and boost to my sense of self, in the past few weeks.

Sneaker Pimps - [Black Sheep]--- On this Tuesday past, a rather lanky freshman came up to me, and he said "Hey, your name is Damien, right?" I looked him up and down, not recognising him, much more than a niggling of general familiarity; perhaps I'd seen him, walking to class, or in the Philosophy department offices.

"Yeah?" came my reply.

"You used to teach Sally's sixth and seventh grade class, at Horizons."

Comes the Dawning Horror.

"I just wanted to come over and say hey."

"... Hey. It's good to see you... Good luck in your classes, man..."

"Thanks, you too."

Electric Hellfire Club - [I Dream of Demons]--- I then found out that a friend of a friend, who was sitting right there, used to babysit him.

Stupid addition! Those kids aren't allowed to be in college! I don't care if it's been six years, they're still 11 and 12, damn it!

Guh...

Anyway, I miss the days of people knowing three or four languages, as a matter of course. I'm petitioning to bring them back. Who's with me?

I keep thinking I'm too old to learn...But really, that's just a symptom of America. You go anywhere else, people know at least two. Dez' old roommate knew four or five.

Exactly. As a group, we just have to take it unto ourselves to not let our children, or our children's children sink to the level of the lowest common denomenator.

Yes. I agree!! Your native language, a multi-use language, and a "foreign language." They do that in a lot of other countries. Japan is the first one that comes to mind... I wish I could better utilise the 2 years Latin, and 5 years French I've got. And I wish I'd gone to Ireland this summer and taken the course in Gaelic. I can understand Spanish, but can't form anything in it.

8 years of Spanish, two of Latin, two of German, and I still have to teach myself, every day, to make any use of any of it.
