$284.90. Orientation. People.
Aug. 19th, 2005 07:04 pmLUXT - [Disobey]--- Orientation was today. Things are shaping up, quite well. I have a very good relationship with the director of graduate studies, for Religious Studies, as well as the Chair of the Philosophy Department. The latter, Dr Rainbolt, likes me because one of his very best friends, from his childhood, was named Damien. (LUXT - [Innocence Lost]). I didn't know this, until i was showing my mother around the offices (she works in the same building, 12 floors up), and introducing her to people. I had been wondering how he learned my name quite so quickly, out of everyone there. I didn't even do that thing I tend to do, where I dominate all conversation, and lead it in whatever way i want. Everyone, of course, told my mother how happy they were to have me there. The obligatory thing to say to visiting family.
"I'm ready." I went around talking to people, and they asked me for my input, for my help, and Dr Nahmias (Nah-me-us) gave me my first assignment, today: Look over his syllabus, for Philosophical thinking, and let him know anything i saw that needed fixing. (Danny Elfman - [The River Cruise]). He was missing the Georgia State Policy on Academic Honesty, even though he mentioned it, so i told him to put it in there. There wasn't anything else, missing, or awkward. Aside from our Getting-To-Know-You shite, i mean. We're still feeling each other out, to see what shape our interactions will take, but i think that's something that won't be fully understood, untill we actually get to the meat of working together.
Tom Waits - [Union Square]--- My schedule, for the coming semester is as follows: Monday and Wednesday, I get into the office by 11, hopefully earlier, to help Dr Nahmias with anything that needs to be done, before class, at noon. At 12 noon, I go to Dr Nahmias' class, Seminar in Philosophy of Mind. At 1pm, I have Dr McClymond's Hindu Sacred Texts class. (MC Frontalot - [Special Delivery]). This Monday, I will be going to Dr Nahmias' Philosophical Thinking class, to meet the students, and let them know that I'll be grading many of their papers, and to let them know who i am, in case they have any questions, or the like. (Tom Waits - [Crossroads]). Every other Monday and Wednesday, however, I'll be in class with Dr Dwyer: Teaching Philosophy.
Tuesday and Thursday are my light days, with only one class, that being Religion and Sexuality, with Dr Ruprecht.
Ben Folds Five - [Missing the War]--- I don't know when i'll be taking Dr O'Keefe's Research/teaching Philosphy class, or even if it's an actual class. We'll see.
Already, i'm spending more time in the department, not wanting to leave. These people have always been professors i've admired, and people i've liked; in many cases they've been my friends, before being my teachers. It is a very strange thing, now, to have them be my collegues. To be working with them, in torturing the poor incomers. I have to say... It feels pretty good. I know that my life is going to be subsumed by the philosphy and religious studies departments, but, other than the moving,
mech_angel, my family, and you people, that's pretty much all i've got. Sad as that may seem. And the moving will, one way or another, not be a concern, very soon. I'm looking forward to this, quite a lot.
LUXT - [Subcutaneous Grin]--- I went to visit my sister, today. Tonight, they're opening the cafe, which was bought by Horizons. She may be working there. They, of course, told me how glad they were to have her there, and how much of a joy and a treasure she's been. The obligatory thing to say to visiting family. Although, with her, i'm more inclined to believe it. As an honest assesment,of my sister's capabilities, and personality traits, she gets to know people, very easily, and people tend to like her a lot. She seems like she's going to do very well, there, and I'm hoping that she continues the path on which it looks like she's started, and takes a leadership role, in the school; that would be very good for her. And the school.
Gorillaz - [Re-Hash]--- The figure, in the subject line, is how much money i spent, all at once, on 15 books, today. Even though i realise that, in many cases, that would be getting off light, with the fact that i dropped it all at once (at the urging of Dr Rainbolt, and my mother, to get it done sooner, rather than later), that Hurt.
That's about all of my reflections, thus far. I'm off to sit very very still, and then clean up, some.

Yeah. It certainly seems that way. I'm hoping that seeming stays positive. :)
