Interpol - [Next Exit]--- It was a long, boring day, today. For the past few minutes, I've been drinking a beer called "Maudite." It means "Damnation," and it is utterly Delicious.

Interpol - [Evil]--- I bought this album, becuase people told me i should listen to it, give it a shot, that it wasn't what i would characterise as "Emo." So far, i am not Completely unimpressed, but there is definately that Emo Twinge, if you but catch my meaning. Some of you may not understand this, but.. I have a frothing hatred of Emo music. It makes me want to punch people in the face, really hard. Maybe that's me over-reacting, but it's the way of it. Here's why:

[livejournal.com profile] beard, Bob, Devin, and myself had a conversation about it, last night and we realised the epochs of music through which we have lived, thus far. The deaths and lives of Rap, Hip-Hop, Punk, Grunge, Goth, Rock, and the emergence of Emo, "Indie," "Nu-Metal," and the mergers of certain of those Genres. (Interpol - [Narc]). Now, when i was a kid, music reflected a certain value. That value, clearly stated, was "I'm Upset, Confused, Angry, And I Don't Know Why. This Makes Me More Upset, Angry, And Confused. Let's Go Break Things, and Think About This." This morphed, over time, into "Let's Hold Rallies That Change Nothing" and "Let's Whine Into the Microphone." This makes me quite angry.

I am a fan of unrequited love songs, used as a couter-point, to display vulnerability. I've been there. I have been without requite. What i don't like, of what i am not a fan is the idea of an entire genre of music saying "S/He Doesn't Love Me, S/He Loves Someone Else, I'm going to write some Albums About This." (Interpol - [Take You on a Cruise]). Let us compare, shall we?

Rock, as a whole: "I said FUCK YYYEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!"

Under this rubric we have:

Punk: "She doesn't love me, 'cause she doesn't Know it yet, 'cause she's with That jackass, so i'm going to kick the shit out of him, then she'll love me."

Goth: "She doesn't love me, because she is Dead, but that's not necessarily an impediment to our consumation of passion..."

Industial: "We hate each other, but that's ok, we get on, with stompy beats, and violence."

Emo: "She doesn't love me. *whine*"

Interpol - [Slow Hands]--- These are, of course, caricatures. For the most part. There is truth, in all of them, but... The point is, Emo posits no solutions to problems. It only revels in its own Emo-tive crapulence. I really don't like that... Rock, for me, and the Church Thereof, is about making the Most of every moment, being fully In whatever you are doing, and doing it Hard. (Interpol - [Not Even Jail]). It isn't about moping around Forever. Only until you figure out something to do, and then Do it.

I don't know. I hate Emo Music. I think it sucks, and it's because i don't understand the Mechanism behind it. How can people prefer wallowing, forever, to fixing a situation, or moving on? I get the beauty of tragedy. But the true tragedy of Beauty is ephemerality. Everything Changes. Including the Sadness of a situation. I learned that, when i was 15. (Interpol - [Public Pervert]). That's really all i have to say about the genre.

Interpol - [Public Pervert]-- As for this album, it has it's merits.

I have pictures and thoughts, in my head, that will soon become writing, and works... It looks to be a good year, despite, or becuase of the fuckups.

That's about all i got.

Later.

You need to break down the Goth and Industrial into phonics like the start of a dictionary definition then put the rest down as well, but on a shirt. Sell it to Hot Topic - 95% of their customers won't realize it's mocking them, they'll just think it's funny and buy it.

I'd think it's funny BECAUSE it's self-mockery. And because I like stomping things. ^_^

I've figured out, after some thought, that the stylistic things I like about emo, i.e. Thursday's screaming, searing lightstrike sounds and much of the sparse aesthetic can be found in less...whiny manifestations in Art-Rock. Like Coheed & Cambria, and Mars Volta. Much fun in mindfuck weirdness.

And I still stand by that Dashboard Confessional, the icon of Emo, need to be bricked.

understanding emo (a.k.a. "Life Sucks")

The reason some people like emo is the same reason that some people have chronic depression. They have been depressed so long, or so HARD, that they have come to define themselves, in a way, AS the depression. They think that they can't get out of their problems, and this becomes their Truth, and the only thing they can rely upon.

This is why It is so hard to break a deep depression. The only way is to break the Truth (and you are the ONLY one who can do it, no one can do it for you (though they can help engender an environment that eases the process somewhat)), but if that Truth breaks, then you are left with nothing. But once they realize that in breaking the Truth (that Life Sucks) do they realize that like does not, in fact, suck. Then they can start accepting other Truths. Like "My girlfriend really loves me!" or "I'm a pretty good artist!" or even, if one is so lucky, "I'm a decent human being worthy of affection!!!"

In conclusion, "Life Sucks" is a pretty crappy worldview, that does not allow for emotional growth.

I could never take emo seriously because it's a mere consonant away from being "Elmo."

Has the implied imagery gauged out your mind's eye with a rusty, plastic spork, yet?

That's right, I said rusty…and plastic.
