To answer a few questions.
Apr. 14th, 2005 10:33 pmNo, my "live until I die line," is not some rhetoric about quality of life. It's not even my line, really. In The Sandman: The Kindly Ones, Neil Gamain has the Spider Women try to convince Hippolyta Hall to stay with them, and be their human sister. They offer her love and food, and "Life until death." She asks, in response "Don't I get that anyway?" "That's what we liked about you. You were so funny."
This nanotech thing is not some half-assed "who wants to live forever" lark. This is a piece of a concerted effort. This follows, in direct line, from something that should be seen as the base platform for everything I talk about here: Education. Re-education is a word i don't like to use too much, as it leads to thinkings of work-camps, and certain techniques. So, while it may well be Re-, it is most assuredly Education.
My point is that people will need a wider field of vision, here-- a wider scope, in what they know and understand about the world. They will need to be more informed, they will need to apprehend the meaning of the materials, in front of them, and they will need to seriously think through all processes, before making decisions. This is not a short term goal. Shorter term than many would like to think, but longer term than, say, tomorrow. If nothing else, the plan is to so radically change the landscape, in such a short period of time, that it becomes sink or swim, and we see how well people really do, under pressure. And i'm ok with that.
Seriously, and for truly, there are things in this landscape that help to determine this world as "post-modern". Think about the levels of meta-concerns, facing us today. We are worried-- those of uis who are worried-- about how our actions are affecting the lives and works of those around us. We are trying to allow autonomy and freedom of choice to everyone, including those whose choices are to remove those of others. Brian Michael Bendis said it best, in "Powers," when the United States voted to make use of [super]powers (super heroes) illegal. The heroes stopped, being the good guys, but the villains, being villains, continued to use theirs, and bust up the joint. (Darkest of the Hillside Thickets - [The Innsmouth Look]). Right now, i'm at about stage two, of the Powers situation: good guys realising that, sometimes, to do what's right, you can't be lawfully good.
What i'm saying here (because i'm thinking clarity may not be high, on this one) is that people need to realise that people are going to want what they're going to want, and more information may be "scary," or Confusing," or "confounding," but it is better for us, in the long run. New and more information is only ever more perspective to sort through, understand, and from which to make decisions, and found your-- not anyone or -thing else's-- ideals. (Prince of Persia - Sands of Time - [The Bath Fight]). I know that so many ideals are founded upon the cumulative traditions in which we are raised ("religions"), but that only matters as much as it matters: In the end, it's your choice, and in the end it's your works. Deal with it.
I came upon an old entry, yesterday, that talked about the layers of things, like House of Leaves, and other things that i can't remember, at the moment... oh, here: http://www.livejournal.com/users/wolven/575553.html
Laura Harrington - [Nocturnal]--- Anyway, i mean you use it to jump off, and orient. You stay stable in you and what you believe, but now you have a more complete perspective. Even and especially if that says "i should have stayed in my box." But you'd have never known that, for sure, if you had. Hah.
To live, until you die, means to continue your life, to grow, change, experience, until you realise you've done all you Can, here. (Corvus Corax - [Die Klage (Die Klage - M.A.P.S.)]). At that point, you stop. You move on, and go elsewhere. System shutdown, time for a new shell.
*sigh* I've lost the thread, here.... Just think, damn it.
Just think.
