wolven7Lush - [Ciao!]--- I did that, today. In my philosophy class, i played some Cole Porter, for the children, because most of them are too young to know who Cole Porter is, and that's sad. Dr Jacobson appreciated it, though, and that's cool.
In my Sociology class, we had a guest: the director of prevention, from the DeKalb Rape Crisis Center. We discussed myths about rape, who believes them, rape stats, and ways to help someone who comes to you, and says they've been raped. She noted that there is often a lot of blame, placed on the victim, in the form of "What did you think would happen, wearing that dress/going with that guy/getting that drunk/&c." (PJ Harvey - [Down By The Water]). I informed her that, in my circle of friends, at the least, we don't ask "who did it," to assign blame to the victim.
Now, no, if i was assaulted, i would not want my friends to rush out, immediately, and kick the crap out of whoever did it. But if they did it, eventually, i wouldn't be upset with my friends, if they did. (Tori & Maynard - [Muhammad My Friend (Live)]). It's a basic principle-- maybe not very "modern," or "progressive," but still basic-- that when someone hurts the ones you love, you do what you can to make things Right. Sometimes violence happens. Sometimes it's making sure the bastard goes to jail, for a long long time. The question i was posed was "Do you think that's helpful?" I don't think it's unhelpful.
When someone intentionally hurts someone else, in my mind, for the sake of a show of power, or whatever other reason you want to attribute it, some form of Justice needs to be done. (Buffy the Vampire Slayer Cast - [I am Under Your Spell]). Violence may not be The answer, or even the "right" answer. But it is an answer.
I get really upset and violent, when i talk about sexual assault, and rape, for too long. I know too many people, if such a thing can be said. (Ruby - [Tiny Meat]). And i don't like to think about the horrible statistics, of how many of the fuckers that do shit like that, get away with it, because that only serves to make me more upset.
I'm going to go.
