"Troy": I give it a "*Shrug* Ehhhhhh..."
May. 15th, 2004 01:46 amLamb - Hearts And Flowers--- The movie was not bad, really, but it was not as awe inspiring and utterly rocking as it could have been. Here's why:
There was a bit too much of the "Fuck the Gods!" angle, from many of the characters. Achilles is to be expected, because that's who he was, but there were others. The gods, themselves, never make a single appearance, and the Temple priests and priestesses were never really shown to perform their sacred duties, outside of a glimpse of a sacrafice. Temples were smashed, of course, and there was fear, from the soldiers, but everyone had an attitude of "Fuck YOU, Pantheon!" And i'm sorry but, ancient Greece and Troy? (Lamb - Darkness). You'd be executed for too much of that shit. Too many dissenting voices, in the film, who didn't dissent.
Characterization was.... Interesting. If you've read it, you know that no one, in this story, is a "Good Guy." Hector is... really the closest thing you get. Maybe King Priam. Everyone else has severe flaws, and they all show, in this movie, big time. Everyone, here, either is an ass, or has their assholish moments. A lot of them. Anyway, Agamemnon, unfortunately, is a maniacal bastard, who damn near cackles, while doing little "Burn The City" dances. He doesn't do that, mind you, But he does scream a lot. Helen was the bitch that she was. Subtle, though. I dug the characters, and the acting, overall. I was not pleased with some of the liberties, taken. That's about all that needs to be cut.
Lamb - Till The Clouds Clear--- However, if you're a fan of Epic battles, human characters weighing the meanings of Honour, personal glory, love, and family, then you will have things to appreciate, in this film. There is much, much, much to think about, in it, and the characters-- with that one exception-- are very well fleshed out. It does lead rather heavily, with the Trojan Emotional Story, but the movie's called "Troy," for Christ's sake, not "The War Between The Greeks and the Trojans," or even "The Trojan War." (Lamb - Wonder). It's "Troy," so it's mostly about them. But the soldiers on the Greek side are human, too.
Everyone is human, in this film. There are people, and faces, and names, and people dying on the points of each others' swords, spears, and javelines. The most long distance weapon you have, is an arrow, and there is still respect, there.
Speaking of which, favourite line: "I am your enemy, tonight-- but even enemies can show respect." -- King Priam
I give it.... Not bad. I Enjoyed it. Will probably buy and/or see it again, because i'm pretty sure i'd have enjoyed it more, if i wasn't in the second row, in a small-ass theater, hurting my neck and eyes to see the screen. I still recommend it.
Anyway, see you kids later.

Responding again, with more info...
Date: 2004-05-26 08:18 pm (UTC)Sparky missed Cassandra, and wished she'd been in it.
In this movie it's set up as if a plague is staged (somehow) to aid the Greeks' story that they've left. In the original Apollo got fucking royal pissed because Aphrodite herself got on the battlefield and SOMEONE in the Greek army had the gall to actually hit her, and Apollo pulled out his Army-Fucking Bow (tm) and gave that army a ZOT, right out of B.C. That was cool, and it deserved a place in the story.
Oh, and something about the "modern" effects? They went too far. Literally, they went too far and did their job too well. They got the boom in the shot, twice that I could count. I could see it reflected in Brad Pitt's eyes. ^_^

Rest was still pretty good.
