wolven7As I said, a few days ago, I love the driving ethos of Everyday Carry, but the inherent & uninvestigated classism and various intersecting privileges that its displays tend to represent and evoke really bother me.
If you take a look at the constituents of most of the EDC "pocket dumps" as they're called, you'll notice something of a trend in terms of both style and content: A Lot of high-end luxury goods, and at least one weapon.
Now a lot of this goes into the preparedness/survival aspect that runs through the heart of EDC culture, but when you place those two things next to each other, a picture can be seen which is one in which you'll find far more white faces than brown ones, and far more wealthy ones than poor ones.
I know, I know, there is literally No way for me to know that, but consider the confluence of the factors involved in those pocket dumps, and there is literally no way for their owners to have the luxury of carrying them every day, without being at least middle to upper-middle class.
As I said, the whole nature of the project assumes a certain societally-levied status on the part of the participant, and I would like to see some EDCs from people who subvert that, as well as any recognition of the problems in the project as it tends to be presented.
Any arguments about how those privileges aren't really there, and how "anyone can participate in EDC," thereby fundamentally--and possibly Willfully--missing my point, and ignoring facts like a person of colour carrying a weapon--legally or not--is far more likely to be detained or shot by the police than a white person, and poor people will have access to a lesser quality of legal representation while simultaneously being more harshly judged for the fact of their socioeconomic status will be not only mocked, but Viciously mocked.
