Word Choices. Fallacies. Ethics.
Sep. 5th, 2006 03:19 pmThe things you say have power, in terms of how you use them. If you are not careful of what you say and how you say it, people will not listen, or will listen wrong. If that is what you want, then know what you are doing. Words mean things, and are very important to me.
(Insert Ethnic Group Here) People. Humans. Mutants. Pro-Choicers (abortionists). Pro-Lifers (parasyte lovers). Biggots. Your greatest defense against them is something simple, really. Be like them, in one respect, and unlike them in every other.
"All ________ are the same!" No they are not. You teach them this by being a mutant, or a human, or black, or white, or whatever, and thinking that they are wrong. I've even seen this work on the Pro-Choice/-Life debate. Pro-Choicers who would not choose it for themselves.
You say, "We are _______, and I am not like you. I don't go to rallies, or picket, or listen to _______ music. We are not alike, in anything but our ______ness. Why would you think that anyone else is any different."
I see a lot of people walking around, these days, wearing shirts that say "Magneto Was Right," and you know what? He may have been. Sometimes. But he was conducting a logical fallacy in thinking that Murderers were Humans, Many others were human, therefore those others were murders.
People, listen to me: Black white green superpowered Christian gayor Cthulhu Cultist. It doesn't matter what you call yourself, or what you are. People can fucking Suck. Stop taking the easy way out, stop lumping people in neat little boxes, for your causes, and your hate, and your blame, and realise that People can Fucking. Suck. Go after the people that shit in the lives of others, if you have to go after somebody. Go after the groups that really matter: the hateful, the murderous, the intolerant.
Just remember. That makes you like them. You strike at them, and hate them for what they are, then you are part of their group. Protect yourself, when necessary, keep your head clear at all times, and, whatever you do, keep in mind what the fuck you're doing, and why.
My ethics class doesn't seem to understand the idea of subsumation. If your first premises are wrong, all following premises and conclusions are suspect. But, it is also the case that what we do and say are patterns where no patterns existed. They are form imprinted on chaos. That proliferation of form jumbles again. Chaos. Someone else finds new forms.
Just because we are apopheniac does not mean that our synchronistic moments mean nothing.
