Ganked this, from William Gibson's Blog: More Evolutiuon Debate.
Today, in my Sexuality and Society class, we discussed the decriminalisation and/or legalisation of sodomy and prostitution. The taboo against the two, it can be widely agreed, comes from the fact that this nation was brought up under Puritanical (always makes me think "Tyrannical.") doctrines, and, in that sense, anything that isn't Male/Female sex, for the intentions of procreation, is evil. Sex, then, is seen as something to be gotten through, not enjoyed. Now, this raises a few very important questions.
Jack Off Jill - [When I Am Queen]--- Firstly, why do people think that we were a majority Puritan society? I mean, yeah, that's who came here, in the 1600s, and such, but.. the government regulations came from Freemasons and Illuminated Thinkers, from the Old Country. They weren't, the most of them, Christian, except in loose terms, and when it came to talking to who would become their constituency. This said, there is an ideal of self-control and regulation, among these sets, that leads to greater retention of power and faculty, but there is also the set of well-known merits of sexual energy transfer. I don't have any concrete answers, here, simply a few threads that seem to lead in a similar direction.
McLusky - [Lightsabre Cocksucking Blues]--- Secondly, what is there, in the held doctrines, that states that male/female sex is the only way to go? It's all in the Old Testament and, quite honestly and literally, Jesus Christ, after whom your purported religion is Named, dear Christians, declared that his doctrine of love, tolerance, and understanding, superceded the Old Testament doctines of Judgement. (Comorbid - [A Faerie's Heart]). Try reading a fucking bible, every once in a while. You might learn something about yourselves. Oh wait...
Next, in the case of prostitution, there is an interesting trend, in the process of evoution, here: From Temple Priestesses/Prostitutes, who dictated the policies of kings, and interpreted the wills of goddesses, to gutter-relegated scum, looked down upon, by almost everyone. Think about the loss of power, there. The amount of control, in what people think, how they perceive, that needed to take place, for that to happen. Hundreds and thousands of years of policy regulation, and reinterpretation. Sick, no?
The supposedly Christian values of the majority of this country lead me to wonder, why do we even bother with this pretense of the separation of Church and State, anymore? (Zorak - [Don't Send in the Clowns]). It's become quite obvious that what people mean, when they say that, is that they won't openly allow their religious preferences be seen to interefere with their policy decissions. And even that is becoming a farce, when you look at the special interest groups being most served, these days. Non-"Traditional" religions, such as Helenism, and certain forms of paganism, are given token nods, every few years, and even other Mainstream (Islam, Judaism, different denominations of Christanity) religions are given shit, among their peers. {Mainstream Christianity is clearly the more throroughly pressured viewpoint, when it comes to Govrenment, these days. Seems easier to twist.}
Phil Collins - [Sussudio]--- Now, i know that like calls to like, but i can't believe that i've just somehow happened to find the entirety of the close-knit Open-minded, intelligent, active, maybe-pagan scene, in the Atlanta Metro area, and across the south east. What i mean, here, is that there are a Fuck Ton of you. And i'm sure you all know a fuck ton more people, who can at least be made to consider what's going on around them. Im asking you why we're allowing ourselves to take steps backwards. Why evolution, one of the most rigorously tested and proven of scientific theories, and one of the only ones that has my near-full support (i don't think it needs massive changes, just that the science in wihch it's based does) has to be called into question, every day, somewhere, as "Satan's Teachings." (Pain - [Umbrella]). I didn't do it. I swear.
Why can't we say, simply, "Science Teaches us one thing. Religion Teaches us Another. Sometimes these things match, sometimes they don't"? Why does everything have to be a battle? Honestly, until concessions and realisations are made, in all camps (religious, spiritual, scientific, other), there's going to be an assload of trouble, reconcilling the sets of people. And that's... aggrivating. Angering, really, because we're getting railroaded.
Marlene Dietrich - [Cabaret]-- I got a little disjointed, there, but I've regrouped. Firstly: Vote, gods damn it, and talk, and legislate, with the fucking best of them. Don't let special interests legislate debate and open dialogue out of the democratic process, if that's what we're going to keep calling this charade. Keep the lines genuinely open, for learning, on all side. Force their fucking eys open, so that they can see that there IS something else out here, whether they fucking like it, or not.
Secondly, don't rely on one mode of operations, because there isn't a solitary discipline out there, that covers everything. (Tom Waits - [Flower's Grave]). Everything stops short, somewhere, and refuses to acknowledge or work with something. So you'll always get something just a little off.... Don't settle for that. Demand more.
The world can show evolution. It can also show miracles. They are not mutually exclusive, i promise you that.
