wolven7: (The Very Devil)

My final feminist ethics lecture (3rd section) just spurred the friendship of two female geeks in my class. I got to talk to them about geek culture and misogyny, and the systematic oppression of women as reinforced by ad media, marketing, toys, television, movies, and fashion. I told them about the Bechdel test, about the experiences of women in the tech industry, in comics and video game stores, what happens when men and women enter stores together. About the Difference between Kristen Stewart's treatment in the media for one moment of low-level infidelity with a married man nearly twice her age, and, for instance, Tiger Woods' treatment for his years-long series of affairs.

Misogyny, rape, gender essentalism. Invisible Architectures of Bias. And they responded. They had examples, and stories, and responses and questions and objections, and they discussed these things, together.

Yesterday's class was Fantastic.

Last night I dreamed... a party throughout metro atlanta? An atmostphere of celebration in every store and bar and restaurant, but nothing crowded. Just night life and convivial. Someone said, "If it's a little tragedy followed by a big tragedy, then it's southern literature. If it's a big tragedy followed by a little tragedy, then it's Capote." Which is true enough, I suppose, except that it's more like a series of little tragedies, in Capote's case.

Both of my Younger Sisters have started a think tank, together, and they want me on to consult/problem solve. You probably don't know it, yet, but you should all be terrified. The sheer amount of intelligence and determination the two of them possess... Well. If you think I'm smart-- and I'm not saying you do-- then you should see the rest of my family.

Time to see about getting car financing. Anyone want to give me a ride to buy a new car on Friday?

The issue in geek culture in regards to women is that there are too many guys that think it's a boys only club. When you consider that many heroines in comics, video games and books is that the writers tend to make female lead into a helpless sack of potatoes at some point. Usually they take a string female character that cannot do anything with out a man. However if you play games like bayonetta the female lead is a strong assertive female that doesn't need a man. She kicks ass and takes names. At no point does she require a mans help. However the character is considered whorish because she is confident in her sexuality and herself.

Honestly I'm not surprised by your younger sisters being smarter, my younger siblings are smarter than me and I'm not stupid.
