And Now We Are 30
Jul. 15th, 2012 08:53 pm0. This year I am Thirty, by our reckoning. I just got back from an international conference on Artificial Intelligence and Ethics, populated by some of the most amazing minds in both fields, all of whom, if they saw my paper, loved my paper. All of whom loved the questions I asked, and the discussions I started. I have steady teaching gigs at two major universities, with time in at a third. I have organised three conferences, at Dragon*Con, and facilitated numerous other engagements.
1. Last year, I was 29. Didn't do much. It was quiet, and we hit the bar, of an evening, just prior to Chris leaving for Louisiana. Still working at Chocolaté, but about to get an offer that would change that.
2. In 2010 I was 28. The day of really sucked, but the day after was the first day I saw Inception, and the first time I met
voraciousbrain, in person. So that's a really important day.
3. In 2009, I was 27. 9+9+9. So I did A Massive Ritual, the results of which I still have, to this day. Still working at Chocolaté
4. In 2008, I was 26. I had just completed graduate school, and had no idea what the hell I was going to be doing with myself. Hadn't started working at Chocolaté, yet, but would be doing so, in just over a month. The Day Of looked like This. The Day After looked a lot like last night looked. Just moved into this house
5. 2007. Five Years Ago i was 25. At 25 I was still in GradSchool, probably bemoaning the latest round of thesis direction BS, for which I had recently completed an interview with Hal Duncan. The Day Looked Like This. Living in the Oakhurst Apartments
6. In 2006, I was 24. Still in GradSchool, teaching and writing. The day looked thus: http://wolven.livejournal.com/2006/07/15/
7. I was 23 in 2005, and that was a giggle, let me tell you. I was still working at It's About Time, finishing up my last semester of Undergrad.
unknownbinaries hadn't moved down, yet. Still living in the second Tucker house.
8. In 2004 I was 22, still in Undergrad, living... Where? Second Tucker house, or Briarlake house? Ah, that's right: That was the night of the Joint Party, and it was the Briarlake house. That was a good night.
9. In 2003, I turned 21. 777. That was good. Birthday Dinner in DC, with my family, then a party in Atlanta. That was the First Tucker house,
kyrael's Parents' place.
10. Then there was 2002. Ten Years Ago. My 20th birthday. This party was also at the First Tucker house. Week before this was an important trip to Philadelphia. The party was a Three Day Afair. That was pretty fantastic. Saw the invention of "Hawaiian Gold." Also had Guinness Ice Cream and Bailey's Irish Cream ice cream. Delicious.
11. 2001... 19 years old. That was my birthday party at the Douglas House. That story is... Well-Told. Shania Mayonnaise.
12. In 2000 I was 18, and i don't have a record of what that was, other than having just graduated highschool and getting ready to start the first year of undergrad.
13. 1999 is 17, and I feel like I should remember 17 better than I do. Maybe a Rave in Nashville?
14. 1998 is 16 years old, and I spent this year's birthday in New Orleans, just after... The Unpleasantness. This is the year I started at Horizons
15. Years old. This number is how old I was this many years ago. 1997. Half My Life, now...
16. I was 14, this year, getting ready to start high school at Grady.
17. 13 this year, and the year I moved to Georgia.
In between, here, there's a lot of stuff: living with my dad; my middle and elementary school at GDS; in 1985, my house in Olney, MD burned down.
30. And 30 years ago, today, this happened:
Happy Birthdays To Me.
If you have any memories of any of these birthdays, feel free to add them, in the comments. Except 2001. Don't add anything about 2001. We're all pretty much up to speed on that one.
