Voigt-Kampff
Mar. 3rd, 2012 03:47 pmIn regards to the last line of the previous post, I was originally thinking of rendering the two-word phrase "Voigt-Kampff" as "Struggle Against Normalisation," but the more I thought about, the more I realised it works best as "Struggle WITH Normalisation."
This also works on a meta-reading, because on one hand, Roy IS seeking more life, but not for anything like a "normal" life, while, on the other hand, Leon clings to his photos, Pris to a childhood she never knew, and Zhora to this extreme expression of sexuality.
That is to say, they all have "Normal" things they need-- things they WANT-- but not in what we might call a "Human" way. Their concerns are fundamentally Other.
Everything they want stands as exaggerated (Oletheros), or in some way skewed. They struggle to normalise at the exact same time as they struggle against the humanity which caused what they want to become regarded as "Abnormal."
So. "Voigt-Kampff": Literally "Normalisation Struggle." "The Struggle With Normalisation."
The Conscious Condition.
