Seriously, though, how can you dislike Adventure Time? It's a post-apocalyptic fantasy world as seen through the eyes of the last remaining human boy and his brother, the talking magical dog.

Together, they travel through the land encountering and misinterpreting the ruins and remnants of what used to be earth, and, if you pay attention, stumbling on clues as to the various calamities which caused the destruction of the human race.

DMT references, an intimated unrequited lesbian love between two of the main characters, EXTREME depth of character development, FIRE WOLVES! SNOW GOLEMS! UNSPEAKABLE HORROR FROM BENEATH THE EARTH AND BEYOND THE STARS!

They have an ability to, with a single seemingly throw-away line, build an entire piece of a world mythology.

How can you not love this show?

Just because it has a good reason to be shouty doesn't make it less unpleasant. Every time someone describes an Adventure Time episode to me, I think, "that sounds cool!" and then when I watch it, I think "this is mostly just a lot of shouting."

Anyway, Totoro is about two kids running around in the woods, and yet there are times when it's quiet. I don't think shouting is required.

Anyway, the episodes I've seen haven't had much in the way of female characters, which is generally a negative point for me. It's possible I'd like the episodes where the female characters actually get more than three lines. Unless they're just gonna shout a lot, too.

There are only three main male characters in the show, with the others all being variations on queens or Princesses, including Doctor Princess, and Princess Bubblegum, who, though not stated in name, is a scientist, and the smartest character in the show.

Some episodes are built entirely around the interactions between Princess Bubblegum and Marceline The Vampire Queen. If you want to give it another chance, I recommend the episodes "Go With Me" and "What Was Missing."

Thanks for the specific episode recommendations. Most of my other friends who are fans of the show like it more for wacky buddy comedy feel, so the episodes they've shown me have been pretty light on female representation at all. The show is still too shouty for it to become one of my favorites, but I can see there being individual episodes that I like. I'll check those out next time I have time.

Dude, yes, what [livejournal.com profile] wolven said. The show is actually very feminist-friendly and cleverly subverts a lot of the sexist tropes you see in kids' cartoons.

So it's Harlan Ellison's A Boy and His Dog as a cartoon show?

Its stupid.
The show lacks any sort of real entertainment value. Maybe Im getting cynical in my old age and I missed something, but Id rather rip my eyes out than watch that show.

I am of the opinion that you seriously missed something, here.

But whatever. To each his own.

See, I feel that way about "Tim and Eric," on [Adult Swim]. It has no point, but seems to be testing some line between ADHD, comedy, and random horrifying absurdity. And it simply doesn't work for me.

I dont watch Tim and Eric either. Ive more or less cut TV out of my life.

I do agree with you about comedy and horrifying absurdity. Whats worse is that there are a lot of shows that really do lack a lot of intelligence.
