Dragon*Con Wrap Up
Sep. 5th, 2011 10:35 pmI didn't see nearly as many people, panels, or random bullshit as I would have otherwise enjoyed, due to the fact that this ws my first year with a schedule, and responsibilities, but everything for which I was responsible went really well, even taking into account one or two SNAFUs and hiccups.
I started smoking again, for this weekend, due to the stress of it. I lost my won't power for that particular endeavor. Oh well. It was fantastic, and it also allowed the following to happen:
Last night,
spooky_chan, her boyfriend Drew, and I sat and had a 20 minute conversation with Martin Landau. I had a great conversation with and bummed a cigarette from Martin Fucking Landau! Here is a picture
spooky_chan took of Martin Landau looking fucking epic, while lighting a cigarette: http://twitpic.com/6g9ygw
That was hands-down one of the greatest moments of con, for me.
Well, that and finding out that Misha Collins in person is exactly like his twitter account.
My and my friend Katherine's "AI and Human Enhancement" panel was very well received, as were most of the Academics panels, which averaged about 35-40 attendees. I say most and averaged, because there were also the extremes: A 10pm panel with eight people in it, and a Doctor Who-themed panel with 119 people in it. So it all kind of evened out, you know?
ext_325066 and her longtime friend Patrick's Archer panel, which I was able to liminally assist in getting off the ground, was a fantastic success. They had over 100 people in the room, and then a line of people still extending out in the hallway, and around some corners. I'm not exagerating at all. They were surprised with one Mr Lucky Yates (the voice of Krieger), four background animators, one of whom was also the costume designer, and a script editor. These people were not scheduled to be there, they just got told about, and they decided to show up. It was fantastic.
I got this picture with Lucky Yates. Pretty great, no?
Ran into people, as always, but never everyone I wanted to see, as always. If I saw you this weekend, it was fucking great to see you this weekend; say hi, here. If I didn't see you this weekend, I'm really sorry we missed each other. We'll have to make a point of it, next time.
I wore suits every day of con, which gave me a phenomenal amount of access to people's psychological triggers, actually. Got very many things I wanted simply by... Asking someone for them. Water bottle? Done? Extra room key at no charge? Done. Cigarettes? Done. Booze? Done (but nothing like often enough). Access to the service elevators? I just walked in and no one batted an eye, or tried to use me as an excuse to follow suit.
Very interesting stuff...
There are parts I'm sure I'm forgetting, both good and bad, but I am... really fucking tired.
It was a very different Dragon*Con, for me, and not entirely in a way that I liked, if I'm to be honest. I like to be able to sink into the flow of Con, and just move moment to moment. That happened, this year, and when it clicked it fucking CLICKED (see above), but it was a much more... Rarefied i guess is the word? A much more rarefied sense, than usual. In all the ways that sentance can be parsed.
Thanks to
techiecl for the room space and the booze. It wouldn't have been anywhere near as good as it was, without your help.
Great job everyone! Let's not do this again, for another ~360 days or so, okay? Awesome.
Time for changing out of the suit, and then bed.
