[livejournal.com profile] unknownbinaries and I saw Splice, yesterday. It took me a while to process it, and [livejournal.com profile] unknownbinaries and I came to some interesting conclusions, on it.

Here's my... I guess we'll call it a review: http://www.needcoffee.com/2010/06/09/splice-movie-review/

Yesterday I watched an episode of Xena entitled "The Titans." In it, Gabrielle wakes three titans and tells them she's a goddess. Two of them are fundamentally "good people," and one of them is a bit of a jerk.
They find out about her fib, of course, and run amok (mostly the jerk), and Xena has to save the day.
But the problems come of her treatment of the titans, more than the lie. In part, she acts haughty because she thinks she has to in order to keep up the act. But mostly she acts haughty because a) it's a chance to show up Xena; Gabrielle has an inferiority complex, and b) she doesn't know how to order people and still respect them.

It's possible that the jerk titan would have spoiled any attempt at peaceful interaction. Still, I was really bothered by the fact that the "pure-hearted" character of the series justified enslaving 3 clearly intelligent creatures based entirely on the fact that they'd be useful and the fact that they weren't human.

Yeah, that's precisely the kind of crap I'm tired of stories pulling.
