"History will show that Lady Gaga was in fact the first effective prototype of a weaponized, bifurcating memetic virus." - M1k3y

No less than three people have mentioned William Gibson's Spook Country, to me, in the past three days, including television programs referencing certain tropes.

Need to go do some more magic.

... I mean "Sell some coffee."

Started Spook Country, but my chestcold is distracting me.

Have you read Bellwether by Connie Willis before? It has interesting things to say about human memes, but I haven't read it for about five years or so. I should reread it.

Really? I mean, I guess I understand what that person is getting at, I just don't see what she's done in terms of becoming a pop culture phenomenon that hasn't been done by several others.

The sheer violence of her Admirers and Detractors, coupled with her actual talent and the insane control she retains on her creative vision hasn't been seen in quite some time. The intensity of it is pretty novel, in its consistency.

Every time we've gone to a bookstore, recently, I've seen Spook Country on the sale shelves, and like I always do when that happens with something I paid (near) full price for, I kick myself.
