We just saw District 9. It was such a brilliant commentary on the nature of human psychology & sociology, as well as a Phenomenal exploration of Self vs The Other, and In-Group Vs. Out-Group mentality and the ways we seek to bridge and/or transgress those boundaries. It shows what happens when we encounter and are made vested in a fundamental injustice, in the way the world interacts with us.

Also, many, many people explode in the course of a building crescendo of inevitable violence borne of an understanding of said Fundamental Injustice.

Go See District 9. It is nothing like what the trailers show you. It is not a traditional action/Science-Fiction movie. It is a glorious film.

That was a delayed reply.

Oddly, though, I was just thinking about this post of yours today. You know what I don't like about District 9? Well, nothing, really, I love the movie, except for the shaky cam, but I dislike people saying "This movie was a great symbol of apartheid." Because No! Bad! No it isn't! Not everything about S. Africa is about apartheid.

No, it's not. But I think what they may more likely mean is that without the history of that specific type of oppression, in the nation of South Africa, the lessons portrayed through the actions of the human species wouldn't have been quite as poignant.

Not About apartheid, but definitely Informed By it.

Very bizarrely... according to my e-mailed comment, it said that Kirsten sent me this comment. o_O

"Eveningstar (mech_angel) replied to a comment you left in a LiveJournal post. ... Their reply was:
"And yeah, since my other compy died, My internetting has been... sporadic, at best."

Weird...

Yeah... It's like, it's not about how corrupt Nigeria has become, either, but that influences aspects of the story. I think of it as being about humanity's capacity, as a whole, to be really fucking awful.

It could have taken place in another country and been just as bad, though. If it took place in America, it could have drawn on slavery, what happened to the Native Americans or the Japanese. If it took place in Germany, it could have drawn on oppression of the Jews. Torchwood managed to show how horrible British government agents could be, as well, in their latest season, with oppression of the poor.

I think having a white friend from South Africa, makes my view a little different. There's absolutely no doubt that apartheid was an horrific event in their history, but all countries seem to have horrific events in their history. The movie was about humanity's capability to be wretched. So focusing solely on apartheid kind of narrows the point, in my opinion.

I thought that would be something you'd really appreciate...

Thought about you, yesterday, re-reading "Johnny Mnemonic." Molly's character still reminds me of you.

Your recommendation on Moon certainly panned out, so I'm definitely looking forward to District 9.
