Paris Hilton is a self-aware, media savvy individual. See below:

Wolven: So, is it just me, or does it seem like her taking this role in 'REPO' was Paris Hilton's way of working through some shit, psychologically?

GreyGirlBeast: @Wolven I think you might be giving her more credit than she deserves.

Wolven: @greygirlbeast Probably; I also posit that the Entire Song is "Ironic." But that last opera scene, her father calling her a monster...

StrangeAsAngels: @Wolven @greygirlbeast She had a script smuggled to her, and forced her way into audition because she was born to play the part.

[At this point, I'd like to state that I just thought the man was being Clever. Read on...]

Wolven: @greygirlbeast Combine w/ that Presidential Campaign spoof ad & it seems there might be a capacity for introspection in her airy ear-space.

GreyGirlBeast: @strangeasangels No shit?

StrangeAsAngels: @greygirlbeast Yep. Spent her time in jail studying for it.

Wolven @strangeasangels @greygirlbeast See, & now we've given her layers & depth, PRIOR to a breakthrough moment & I don't know how I feel about it

----------

So, my interest piqued, I go search, and sure as shit, Paris Hilton had the script smuggled into her jail cell, so she could practice the role.

Now, think about this: She read the part. She saw what was going on, and even if she only, at first, saw "Wealthy Heiress Daughter," she couldn't help but notice the turns it took (If you're confused because you've not seen REPO! The Genetic Opera, I urge you to go watch it, right now). And she took the role anyway. This leaves us with three options:

1) The further parallels didn't penetrate.

2) Somewhat more disturbing: combined with her "prison time," she had a breakthough moment, and became aware of how she was seen, in the world, and it made her need to show the world that she could change.

3) Most disturbing: Posited by StrangeAsAngels, Paris Hilton is a media-savvy individual, who is playing her public image to the hilt, and smirkingly saying "That's Hottt," all the way to the bank...

Couple the very end of REPO! with the fact that we haven't really seen or heard anything from the tabloid rags about Ms Hilton, since this role, and it points at some combination of the last two as the most likely options...

Thoughts?

1. I want to say you're right. I want to be, because believing our media driven society is as vapid as it makes itself out to be is depressing and keeps me from watching tv.

2. I still refuse to see Repo. Why? Upon first seeing the trailer I was convinced it was an ineter spoof created movie. Secondly, the only other movie trailer that made me think the same thing was Twilight, except I really thought that was a made for tv SyFy movie. So gay it gets the new SyFy title.

3. Are we really noting that we haven't heard anything out of Miss Hilton? Really? I'm not judging, I'm asking if that's sort of...what's the word...heaven? In fact, I'm done following this train of thought. It just made me stupid.

Yeah, don't get me wrong, I'm REALLY GLAD that we haven't heard anything, I'm just thinking it's a strange coincidence.

And I do think Repo! is worth seeing. It's a touching story of addiction, betrayal, and family secrets, with some Amazing Performances by a wide range of people...

Simply wonderful.

It's the first movie that's had a cast that's inspired me to NOT see a movie. I think I'd have a hard time not throwing things at the TV when Paris Hilton or that God awful thing from Evanescence (you know, I can't even be arsed to care if I spelled that band right) came on. I mean Paris Hilton's voice is like a rabid kitten on a chalk board. No one has found a selling point. Because, see, great story aside it's STILL a musical. STILL! Which means voices I've never wanted to hear will make noise and I probably will be unhappy with that.

Then if you can find any of Sarah Brightman, or Anthony Stewart Head's parts, by themselves, do yourself the favour.

Of not taking the time or effort to dissect something that I didn't find worth the effort in the first place? Consider that favor done. :D

I don't know what type of films you like, but Repo! is quite entertaining. the songs are fun and well sung, the actors are really into their parts and perform them with flair, and the story is campy and silly, but in the classic way. It is a movie that knows it is just fluff and entertains accordingly.

Does not take itself seriously but also does not use camp as an excuse to cut corners. So, I guess it depends on your idea of fun and if you like musicals. Also, there really is no gore. I was pleasantly surprised b/c I hate gore.

Eh. I'm not a big movie fan. The most joy I've gathered I'd garner from this would be to rip it to shred ala LJ movie critic. I like going Roger Ebert on some shit movies.

I mean people also tried convincing me Pirates of the Caribbean and 300 were good movies and the only joy I got from them was tearing them to itty bits. And you know, PC at least had Geoffrey Rush. In my opinion you could follow Geoffrey Rush around with a camera or have him make out with Johnny Depp and it would still be a better movie than that rotten pirate scented piece of shit.

Firstly, I seriously think you are thinking too hard about the mind of a celebrity and spending too much time analyzing her. Having said, remember, she is a celebrity. As such, we know absolutely nothing about her excpet what the TV tells us. Compare that to you or anyone you know.

What would some stranger conclude about you if all they knew about you was what they read on your 3 most recent LJ entries? What would someone conclude about me if all they saw was some guy in a skirt talking about how hot David Bowie is? What would someone think about Zack if all they knew was he plays D and D every week and watches Battlestar Galacatica?

So, yeah. Paris Hilton is annoying and should not be allowed to reproduce, but she is human and is spoken about by strangers as if they know her intimately, so consider those 2 bits and all they entail.

True indeed, but see below.

If I were going to be a celebrity, I'd at least try to make it for something I could stand pretending, for years at a time.

Based on what you said below, at that point in your reasoning, I think you are placing too much emphasis on your perception of her and your way of approaching life. If it is all an act, it really is not that elaborate nor does it require that much investment.

Her family is rich so she is rich. Rich Americans get attention. Most people crave attention. She understands she can get more attention by playing up to the cameras that will follow her regardless of anything she does or does not do. It is not necessarily her mind that you need to understand b/c her mind really is not doing anything but feeding into the hunger of our culture for gossip.

She didn't make herself famous for being rich, our peers did. She just realized it and then realized she could get even richer by giving us what we want. So, it really is not such a complicated charade when all you have to do is stand there and smile and I am sure you understand the appeal of money.

And if your mind still hurts just remember we are all multi-faceted, no matter how much we are looked down upon or misunderstood. She could very well be the most worthless human alive, but that is just one side of her.

Agreed. Which brings us back around to giving her to much credit.

Precisely.

I obsess over the weirdest shit, sometimes. I think the idea of her actually having complexity and depth was so morbidly curious, I wanted to figure out what would make it true.

Too much credit, and too much mental space.

Good morning.

Yeah, that's very true. Anyway, I think I've given far too much brain space to something I originally intended as a half-joking, far distant probability.

Why would any of this be shocking?

Date: 2009-08-18 04:25 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] wolven.livejournal.com
Because I cannot fathom the mind of someone who decides to train their image to make themselves famous for being rich and rich for being famous. I can't understand that appeal, nor how anyone could sustain the charade for as long as she has...

It hurts my brain to try...

Could be nurture

It could be the reason she would do such a thing is because, not so much someone told her "These are the highest things in life - go aspire to them," but rather "This is what you are."
Once a person gets it in his head that he is something, he can go to crazy lengths to maintain the identity.
And her parents named her after a hotel.

Can't offer much. I'm a prime example of Momentai's statement that we only know what we're fed; I haven't ever even seen first-hand footage of this media beast, let alone formed a real opinion on her. All I've had has been Jon Stewart mentioning her on The Daily Show (talking about the interruption of actual news to show that her car is moving somewhere), a moment's reference in Fans!, and a radio spot that pointed out the bit about the hotel-naming. I can't think of anything else I've heard about this person.

I vote #3, to a lesser or greater extent. I once saw an interview of her where she talked about herself. She said that thinks of herself as a businesswoman. She has created all kinds of things to sell (I'm not certain what, I think clothes and perfume?) and then has used her celebrity to sell them. Now, this could be purely from boredom, or an excuse to party more, but in a way it really isn't our business. I think she just tried to find the best way to deal with growing up as a ridiculously rich person with photographers chasing her down. That's a hell of a thing to live with. I've always suspected that she's far more clever than she might appear. She uses the media far too effectively.

Think of the old nobility: Medici, Borgia, et. al.
In this world, fame is a source of power.
She has been undoubtedly trained as a noblewoman: business, image, politics.

Pray you never see her assassins.
