Watching CNN, this morning (Why do I do that to myself?), they noted that the top sellers in the CARS trade-in program are hybrids, and compacts. And all I can think is, "Holy Shit! You mean when you incentivize people toward Doing things, toward obtaining a higher standard, they'll actually get off their asses, and... Do it?!"

I do have to say, though, I'm impressed at the speed with which the shift has taken place. Hopefully, with the President's Plan to upgrade the Nation's Electrical Grid (something that needs to happen Sooner, rather than Later), the proliferation of recharging stations will increase.

Read this entire article, because it makes the last paragraph especially important: "Conservatives are the Real Joker."

Aned this is awesome: 'Researchers effectively treat tumors with use of nanotubes'

Good job, so far, Today. Keep it up.

why couldnt we have just priced our better-for-us cars at lower prices rather than offer purchasers a rebate from the govt?

since the rebate indicates that people would buy more of these kind of cars if they were only slightly cheaper, a clever merchant would simply elect to price cars lower and thus sell more cars...

Pricing them lower, at the outset, works for the consumer, but not the manufacturer who has to refit a segment of their production line, and spend less time producing things they "Know" will make them money. I put that in quotes because their determination model is post hoc, only clear in retrospect, and so always out of date.

Now that they "Know" that they'll sell, they're making more of them, and most car manufacturers in the US have already announced plans to begin, increase, and/or dedicate production of hybrids and electrics, in the coming months and years.

This was also immediately followed by a re-announcement of the plan to hybridize the tractor trailers, in the US.

It is not necessarily the price, it's the attraction of the rebate. Consumers like to be enticed and told there is a bargain. It makes them feel better about spending. Plus, the clunker part is important because the people would not normally be able to get rid of their cars, especially not for $4500.

I'm glad this program is such a hit, something needed to be done like this.
Let's see if this can be approved for more funding and this ia kick-start to other progressive energy programs.
