I heard the podcast today. That really was a dick thing to say. And it was totally unprovoked, so I don't understand why he felt the need to bring it up if he was just going to shoot it down w/o discussion there.

Dude, seriously, you think he'd bring up the Marijuana issue now of all times, when the economy is in the shitter? Cut the man some slack, for reals.

Now isn't the time to try to work on stuff like that. Let the man get some firm footing before tackling controversial social issues.

As I said, I understand the political challenges, but there are better ways to do it than a dismissive, divisive "No."

If nothing else, though, it's caused a great many people to discuss it who wouldn't have, otherwise. Unfortunately, I doubt that was his plan.
