The change in "acceptable sizes," for women, in recent years-- the trending toward the unhealthily thin-- correlates to/coincides with the rise in societal acceptance of the desire for personal and public irresponsibility. As men and women have decided to become less and less responsible, contributing members of Western society -- increasingly interacting with each other in ways that are stagnantly juvenile, at best-- the need and/or desire for women to be seen as "fertile" declined, as well. Overly thin, hipless, bustlesswomen became symbols of freedom from the Reposnibility inherent and implicit in the heteronormative relationship dynamic, as well as an outlet for guiltless, cross-gender sexual desire.
A Freudian would speak, here, of the sexualization of children, of sublimated and repressed sexual desires, locking individuals in a pattern of Innocence-Retention, mapping and projecting that search, outward, and imprinting it upon the Female. Insert, also, standard "Madonna/Magdalene" dichotomies and the hopes for salvation, reunification, purification. And while these may be individual driving factors, accumulating in force and direction toward a larger societal push, they are not The Driving Force.

See? With enough time and interest, you can make Anything sound plausible. It's all just lenses through which we look at the situation, right? Right.

I think projection is one of the most solid tools Freud bestowed upon us, because it's relatively free of theoretical baggage. Even if you think penis envy is the dumbest thing evar, it's still possible to get behind projection, because it can work in so many ways.

This is too much fun. Seriously? I thought this up while in the car, on the way home, two days ago. ^_^
