Revisiting this piece, over a year later. Going to be expanding on it for a thing, and I would really, Really appreciate your input, as a member of the society concerned. Sound good?

Good.

Look at your elections. Millions want to be told what to do by people just like them. They don't want wise or smart folks in charge because that might force them to acknowledge that their 'content lives' which are held up as the epitome of 'good' are not the wisest or smartest or as good as they can

Have you seen Revolver?

in fairness...as much as people tout non us media as being so much better than us media, anytime I talk to non americans who don't spend any time in the states their perceptions of what goes on here is warped to hell as often as it's not.

millions of people don't want to be thralls, they've just grown up with that being normalized behavior and called by a more positive sounding name.

There are a lot of other issues that come into play as to why american politics play out the way they do.

I was just using the election as an example, but you're right. The problem is that there is a shit-tonne invested in the status quo, on all sides, and attempts to change will always be dismissed or vilified by the Establishment.

I think that there is a drive, in all humans, to be better. The problem is, the being better can be extremely uncomfortable, and there is a VERY Powerful human drive toward comfort. Again, part of the goal is to bootstrap the whole species into a sense of self- and collective-preservation, in which the latter part is equated with continual betterment, balanced with the understanding that stagnant perfection can (and maybe should) be avoided.

No, I haven't seen it. Would you recommend it?

Quite agree, see my comment to Samm. Problem is, the Collective/community drive has fragmented. Individualism is feted, while communal ethic is derided

Yeah, and that keeps happening, but I'm seeing a trend in fighting back, especially in the face of the botched "community organizer" thing, from John McCain and company, this fall.

in so far as tv is conscerned...

have you ever read culture jam?

One interesting theory posited there is the way tv (and the net in many respects) conditions people to become stimulus junkies that require sudden bursts of stimulation to keep them tuned in. The downside to this is also that that this kind of model is not conducive to ingesting information beyond soundbites.

So it's an uphill battle in a lot of ways..it's not just about better alternatives, but battling addictions as well.

What do you think is the best method for combating the addictions?
