If you don't think this kind of thing matters, look up the name of "Troy Anthony Davis," a man who should have been convicted of something, surely, but not first degree murder.
2) Thanks to the Nanosolar Company, power from the sun is now cheaper to harness and produce than coal, and it is being talked about... Where? Find more articles, find more specs. Give the people more information.
3) People are Lying To You. [They are down-playing] the [potential] dangers of high-fructose corn syrup. I quote myself from two weeks ago, when I say:
"I kind of want to punch IN THE FACE the people who do this kind of blatant spinning of facts, and avoiding of central questions. The different metabolic processes that process different types of sugars determine how they latch onto and rest within your internal systems. Anyone who tells you different is trying to sell you a product. Like, perhaps, a specific kind of sugar or something."
I then went on to chide myself for the phrase "processes that process." Which was deserved.
These are the things you should be thinking about, today.
That and the rules I posted for surrogates and debaters. i'm tired of letting people NOT ANSWER FUCKING QUESTIONS. Fix this.

Date: 2008-09-14 03:47 pm (UTC)There are a series of commercials now, that I keep seeing, which will show someone offering something to someone else... Here, like so:
Lady: Here! *hands over Popsicle* Have a bite.
Man: ...I thought you loved me... ;_;
Lady: I do? Have two bites!
Man: Don't you know that has high-fructose corn syrup?
Lady: So?
Man: Well, you know what they say about it...?
Lady: What do they say?
Man: That...uh...
Lady: That it's made from corn? Has the same calories as sugar and, honey, it's fine in moderation.
Man: ...And you only brought one? *takes the Popsicle*
Here's another one:
But apparently the users on YouTube that actually post it think it's as bad as Tobacco companies saying Nicotine isn't addictive. o.O

It's pretty terrible for you, and i am, in general, mad at the FDA for its lack of oversight, on the issue. Or any substantive issue, where vast amounts of corporate money and special interests are involved :\

Date: 2008-09-14 04:39 pm (UTC)What I have a problem with is that more things lead to obesity than just one chemical that was made to do the same things sugar does. Perhaps it doesn't suppress the appetite, but shouldn't you know when to stop eating something anyway? Because I think drinking, say, seven cans of coke and blaming it on a lack of appetite suppressant as a reason why you don't drink it in moderation is just a cop out. You drank seven cans of coke because you wanted to, not because the HFCS didn't make you stop by sating your appetite.
I do agree that it's probably not a good thing that it's in practically everything we eat. Though, if it wasn't and sugar was, sugar would be in HFCS's boat right now. Or people would continue eating it and saying, "It's fine, it's sugar, and it's natural." So yeah, it's hard to moderate the amount of HFCS we eat, but there are plenty of very healthy people out there who do eat it all the time, but because they eat everything in moderation, they're fine.
Doesn't that make sense? I drink soda and eat things with HFCS all the time, I probably eat too much candy and too much "sugar", but I'm not obese?

On the note of corn-growers... I don't know, maybe it's growing up in Illinois that makes me a corner-grower-sympathizer, but what's wrong with wanting to spend a lot of money on alternative energy research?

Date: 2008-09-14 04:50 pm (UTC)Yes, the key is a better diet, overall, but glossing over the real dangers inherent in HFCS, refined sugar, splenda, stevia, or Whatever, only hurts us, and prevents us from making the kind of informed dietary decisions that will keep us healthy, for a longer time. This HFCS campaign is exactly that kind of glossing. Give people all of the facts, and let them make a decision. Answer questions fully and honestly, and people will be more likely to trust you, and your product.
And in regards to the search for different energy sources, there's nothing wrong with it, at all. The problem is that by "alternative energy," they mean corn-based oils, when they are, in many ways, worse than fossil fuels.

Date: 2008-09-14 05:05 pm (UTC)Yes, I do admit that having all the facts and making a decision based on information is better than being given half the facts and making uninformed decisions. But scare tactics (anti-HFCS), insults (both) and giving half truths (pro-HFCS) are all equally bad choices, in my book.
To corn-based oils: fair enough.

Date: 2008-09-14 05:39 pm (UTC)But there are problems with it, and it does jam up the works inside our bodies, on a wholly logical, clinical way, and for that we, as a country, need to cut it back from all the foods its in, if it isn't necessary. And we need to know that artificial sweeteners are not an excuse to use more than we would use sugar (i.e. 2 Splendas does not = 1 sugar!).

Date: 2008-09-14 05:21 pm (UTC)I thought it was interesting that the "metabolizing" section footnoted to a study in 2007 only on "normal weight women." And the assertion was that the study proved that all people metabolize HFCS the same as sugar.
Even if the claims in that link are true, and without the "moderation" appetite link, HFCS is still contributing to obesity because it's "cheaper," "more stable,"* and therefore easier to use to make everything sweeter. Which still means that the one man who caused the obseity epidemic in america was Fidel Castro. Or maybe the baseball manager who kicked him off the team in America.
