From IM and then Twitter, a response to this: http://3quarksdaily.blogs.com/3quarksdaily/2008/06/monster-on-the.html :

Why do I still live in a society where comics are not taken seriously, by the majority of the populace? Where I have to call someone stupid, to their face, because they still stand next to the "comics are only for kids" bullshit?

Comics are not only for children. Cartoons were NEVER meant for children (see "Bugs Bunny Nips the Nips"). Fairy Tales were adult media.

Talking with @strixus who seems to think it has something to do with each era's redefinition of "childhood." A separation of "innocence." Being then re-upped in the 60's, as suburban culture tried to "keep us safe," and the part of "us" we want safest? The "innocent." Children.

And I say, with the enshrining and rewarding of that innocence with a lack of responsibility, what would we expect to happen, now? [Now in their 20's,] they now have the ability to analyze the situation, to think of a more "innocent" and less responsible state and force themselves into it.

And thus, Hipsters.

Electric Six - [Naked Pictures (Of Your Mother)]--- Now, let's see how many people stop following me, on Twitter, because they can't take a joke. As a side note, let's see how many people get really angry about being told they hold a small-minded, stupid position on comics and literature, when evidence, history, and investigation back me up.

Electric Six - [Danger! High Voltage (w/ Jack White)]--- Man, I'm testy, lately...

What's that about?

k..................i'll bite, i'm cranky enough too

people think comics and cartoons are for kids because most people are closed-minded morons who think they learnt everything they needed to know about the world in high-school or college/university, when they were churned out of the education assembly line to be good little corporate citizens, to work all day, drink Coke, sit down at night and absorb their life instructions from advertising, "reality" tv, sit-coms, "dramas" and all the rest of that crud that passes for entertainment on this planet. they've probably never questioned anything in their life, believe the framed discourse that is presented to them, and think the carrot of retirement will make it all worth while; because retirement=heaven in teh_media today.

these are the people we share the planet with. the question is how to nudge them just so, that their minds might open just slightly. instead of letting them give Marketing the best set of info ever, while playing "games" on Facebook. sideways is the answer i think.. and maybe the right magick? you tell me.

((all of which being why JR becomes DS.. because noone takes a sf'ictional, cartoon character seriously))

and if people do stop following you.. fuck 'em if they can't handle the power.

Some of the problem is also in a lot of the mainstream comics themselves. I mean, go into your comic shop, what do you see on all of the covers? Not profound discourse (although I have had a 40 minute conversation discussing feminism in Buffy at my local, among others. Gods I miss my shop!) but boobies. Large boobies on thin women. Muscled men in tight spandex. People see things like that and stereotype the rest of what:s in the books as childish nonsense. The stereotypes sadly exist for a reason (as do most other stereotypes, they don:t just appear out of nowhere), and unless the comics industry itself strives to present a more mature image of itself to the world at large, that kind of closeminded thinking won:t change. No matter what kind of amazing theological discussions, accute insightes, wonderful discoveries the comics themselves are having inside their pages.

all true.. and i don't really read the "mainstream" comix; none of the X-series, ok, yes Buffy and Angel, but even the awesome indie's like DMZ for instance, are drawn in the same manner...

All fair and true points, indeed.

Especially about DS. I contemplated the same thing, myself, for a while, there.

You just need to get laid. :P

You worry about other:s people:s opinions too much, I think. It:s a cancer thing. And people generally tend to take such criticism better if you say it in a slightly different light. Ie: hmmm, I can see where you get that impression, but actually, *lots of evidence, history, and investigation* Given all of this knowledge, would you concider changing your opinion? But then, how often do conversations with the uneducated actually go like that? *shrug* It:s another one of those problems with The Masses. God forbit that The Masses be told that the way they percieve The Universe is wrong.
