Speak

I would like you to do me a small favour, today [(now more appropriate for Tomorrow)], if you're able. It's a tiny thing, really, but I don't know that you'll want to do it.

But just give it a shot.

Say something. If you don't generally speak, for whatever reason, then anything at all, will do.

But say something.

When something's a terrible idea, and you know why, and you have a better one, say something.

If a policy is unfair, stupid, and unfounded, and you have thought of a way to make things work better, say something.

If there is something on your mind, something you don't say because oh god, what might people think? Say something.

That's really it, on this end. I just don't think you should sit and not say the things you want to say, need to say, because of some bullshit inter-office politics, and there arre enough of you, in enough positions to make a change.

Or maybe I'm just going insane.

I'm basically incapable of keeping my mouth shut. I mean, I can hold off long enough to figure out an appropriate way of saying what I need to say (most of the time), but that's about it.

What are they going to do, fire me?

Precisely.

The question becomes: Is Georgia still a right-to-work state?

What if you work for yourself?

Then tell yourself the truth, and the things you need to hear. :)

I refuse, sir. I refuse to do that for only One Day, for the span of Today. I try to do that everyday. I will sometimes keep my mouth shut, but usually that:s in the situations of *they really don:t want to hear what I have to say* or *oh gods, I just really don:t know how to explain that in Japanese* but never in the *I should really say something, I know I should say something, but I just don:t think I will.* Not anymore. I:ve had that feeling faaaaar too often and ignored it in the past and something has gone exactly like I thought it would, even though it probably would have been fine, it wasn:t and I:m tired of dealing with it. So now, if the though occurs to me to bring it up, I do. Not just one day, but every day.

Good. Then you've completed this assignment, and should think of something you're not doing, but could be, to change the world for the better.

Ok I did.

I did it today, not yesterday, but only because I didn't see this post until last night. Anyway today I manned up and was candid with my boss about some pressures I've been feeling on my team. Ordinarily I probably would have tried to go it alone, because that's how I roll. Anyway speaking up was the right thing to do so thank you.

I do the other kind of speaking up, every day. I am not shy about voicing a contrary opinion, because I believe it's my duty to do so. Politely, of course, but my work and my personal life are based on an open exchange of ideas where disagreement is common and not negative (probably cuz of I <3 philosophy...)

But I do not speak up about asking for help, and today I did, and thank you for the post. I'm not going to give it more credit than it's due and say it was the REASON I spoke up. But it was on my mind, and it was for sure ONE OF the reasons.

I'm glad it was one of the reasons :)
