momentai: Leonardo DiCaprio, Warner Bros. to make Live Action Akira
From Animation Magazine: 'Otomo’s influential animated Akira takes place in a futuristic, post-apocalyptic city named New Tokyo, where a young member of a biker gang learns to wield his destructive telepathic powers through a government experiment. The live-action take, which will surely involve a lot of visual effects work, will be set in New Manhattan.'
I'm sorry. No.
Aum Shinrikyo, millennial fervor, and the world's only post-apocalyptic culture. ONLY. Tragic as the events of Septeber 11, 2001 were, two planes in a building do not an Atomic Bomb make.
To remove the story Akira from Japan is to tell a different story. While it may be a good story, with interesting themes, it will always be something that could have been done better, with just a Small concession, and Lot more understanding.
That is all.

You made the rain black, and shoved your values down our throats. We forgot who we were. You created Sato and thousands like him. I'm paying you back."
