Watch it. Go ahead. Watch it now.
You've got 77 minutes to spare, and I'll wait...
Okay, did you enjoy it? Well, let's talk about it, and we'll come 'round to that, then. Alan Moore, in this video, takes the time to discuss the combinations of magic, writing, art, literature, cognition, 60's and 70's era psychadelic mindbreaking. He talks about quantum mechanics, systems and informational entropy theories, and the idea of the onrushing singularity not as some mythical nerd rapture, but as a change in the way we think and see the world. That's primarily what Mr. Moore talks about, here: The way we think about, see, and interact with the world. This is, of course, very important to me, but the question is, why should it be important to you?
Money. Clothes, branding, American Idol, DVDs, television shows, film, and music. Books, comics, poems. All of it is informationally grounded, and it attempts to change the way you think about the world around you, the way you interact with the things at your disposal. If your information saturation level is above 100%, then what happens? You start to produce things, think things, like water dripping from a soaked sponge, and maybe you'll produce a lot, if squeezed. If everyone's satuartion levels are above 100%, then there will then be a constant conversation between information knowledge and ignorance, an interplay between signal and noise completely unlike anything we, as a species have ever seen before.
That means that we will have to completely rethink the way we approach the world, we will have to break ourseslves of old patterns and habits, or integrate them into new types of functioning. "Apocalypse," "Revelation," "Singularity," "Paradigm Shift": These are all merely ways of saying "The Way We Handle Shit Is Going To Have To Change." And it is. You can't hide from the fact of informational increase by saying "I've got to go to work," or "I've got class tomorrow." Every action you take, you more than any one person before you, and now more than any previous moment in the history of the universe, adds more information to the gestalt of things we can know. You have to ride that line, in my opinion, you have to crest the wave, because... Well. That's where you are. That Now point. That intersection of Speed and Position. That's you. All of us.
Make money, go to work, school, the club, post stupid pictures on your MySpace and FaceBook, or read comics, or write them, draw them, build houses, go to protests against things you hate. Everything you do builds a little bit more toward the deconstruction and reconstruction of the way we view the world, and everything you do has a hand in shaping what that view will be, when it's done.
I... hope this has meant anything at all, to you. Have a nice day.
