What do people expect as a good salary for a professional job?

I would be ecstatic to get anywhere near 50K a year, but this article bemoans one professors job as "not reaching 50K.

At my best I have only made 33K in one year, and it's usually been far less than that.

These days, if you're making anything below $70,000, with any kind of family, then you are technically in poverty.

Honestly? $50,000/year sounds like a wonderful golden dream, to me. I'm living off of what is probably <10k/year, right now. Not enough to not have moments of panic, that's for certain, but I get by....
