Now, you all know me: I loves me some Technology. But this sense that everything must be conglomerated, amalgamated, and reduced down to fit in our pockets is the very opposite of the Spectacle that is Moving Picute Cinema.

Do you think that a movie like Sunshine would work on a smaller television, let alone an Apple Device? What about (*sigh*) Cloverfield? I'm not what one would call a J.J.Abrhams "Fan," but even I have to admit that the sheer size and scope of this new film looks to be far more than any iPhone could ever handle, let alone Properly Convey.

Found via Ectoplasmosis.

I'm off.

While I agree with the idea, I am a bit disappointed he doesn't see the ability to watch moving pictures on a phone or small media player as a challenge to create something that takes advantage of it.

What he said. It's a touch disheartening to hear someone who'd previously been considered so avant-garde come forth with such one-sided aversion to a potential new medium.

Also, I only have a modestly-sized TV and my only sound system is its built-in speakers. Am I being cheated, Mr. Lynch? Is my experience less-valid because I can't afford a home theater system? Are you going to buy me one so that I can see "Eraserhead" the Way You Meant It To Be Seen, or am I shit out of luck and shouldn't bother trying?

I still fundamentally agree with the thing he's directly saying here (though I can't say I've ever heard of anyone watching a feature film on an iPod/Phone), but the more I think about what seems to be at the root of his intent, the more it troubles me.

Like I said, i think he's just upset with the drive to scale down being used as a selling point.

I'm sure he does, but I also think he's tired of the ability to watch existing media on what he sees as smaller, less engaging devices being used as a selling point.

As an iPhone lover, I would like to register that I agree that it isn't very sensible to watch films (like perhaps David Lynch makes) on my device. It is much more suited to the 3 minute instant gratification YouTube mode of entertainment that so many people are engaged in.

And for that it fucking rocks.

I can see that; hell, even television shows, and music videos would probably work well.
