'Catholic League warns of "Atheism for kids" movie, book series'

Firstly its not Atheism, it's about recognition of the ability to Exercise The Free Will God Gave You.

'Christian groups slam new Kidman children's movie'

'The US Conference of Catholic Bishops however has been more nuanced in its approach warning in a review of "The Golden Compass" of its "anti-clerical subtext, standard genre occult elements, character born out of wedlock, a whiskey-guzzling bear."

'But it adds that "taken purely on its own cinematic terms, (it) can be viewed as an exciting adventure story with a traditional struggle between good and evil, and a generalized rejection of authoritarianism."'

See that? The USCCB itself put out a statement saying that it's perfectly valid to see the book as standing not against The Church, but as standing against misguided Authoritarianism. Of taking the view that institutionalised dogma without interpretive thought and individual meaning can be a very bad thing.

Now think about what that means, if you say you're against that, to people who take that view of the books and movie.

I'm just saying.

The movie kind of looks generic, but all this publicity should push it into the realm of classic. It certainly didn't hurt the Harry Potter franchise.

The books are absolutely wonderful, and i only hope the movies do and are made well enough to bring more people to the books.

It's not really a Christian series, but it's definitely not an atheist series either, seeing as how God exists in it.

Precisely. Pullman is an agnostic, and it shows.

Honestly, every time the Catholic Church puts out one of these ridiculous propaganda bullshit articles, I feel completely ashamed to admit being Catholic. Good job, Church, embarrassing your own members really adds to your credibility. *eyeroll* But you know, it's not even so much the Roman Church doing this, it's bored Americans who fan flames of controversy in hopes of setting the world on fire with hatred for..what? For a movie. What. The. Fuck. "A movie about the battle of good and evil! Must be about atheism!" Ever notice they use the *same* argument for each fantasy movie? Where's that priest that wrote a book in defense of Harry Potter's message? We need him, and we need him now. A blip of sanity in the devout sea of madness.

Yeah, it's Donohue and the damned American Catholic League, not the actual Vatican and majority Catholics.

You could do it, you know. If there is to be a defined "Religious Right," then there must also be a Left, and a Centre.
