What hurts the most is when your own department doesn't believe in you enough to listen to what you're saying to them.

"I want to do this. This is important to me. Tell me what I need to do to make this happen."

"I think this project is too ambitious, too broad, too much for a master's thesis."

"This is the project I want to do; here, at the heart of it, is what is important to me. This Thing, That I Am Explaining To You Right Now. Tell Me. What Needs To Happen. To Get This Done."

"I think this project is too ambitious, too broad, too much for a master's thesis."

"Here, see, I've narrowed it, I've modified it to the best of my ability with the input you've given me, thus far. What needs to happen, to get this done."

"You know, no student I've ever known has done this in as little time as you're attempting."

"... You mean a year and a half? Because that's how long I've been attempting this. The basic fact of the matter is that I've been working on this project for a Very long time, and No One Has Really Been Working With Me. Is that how little time you mean?"

". . ."

Because I didn't actually say that last part, and I'm spending my Considerable self control on making sure that I don't.

Apparently I will not be graduating, this semester.

If you'll pardon me, I need to go drink, now.

Sounds like you need a new thesis advisor, and ASAP...

Sometimes the establishment sucks, and academe sucks, but we find ways around the system...that is how we survive and hopefully, foster new directions that scare the heck out of the establishment...

Man that sucks. I didn't realize the background there. So, have you finished all your course work and just need to do your thesis? It seems like there should be some sort of recourse for you...there has to be some way to find a good fit, with someone, so you can progress. Have you tried talking to the department head? In my college, he is frequently the only one who can get anything done. He holds an administrative post, but he has more "say" than most of the academics, when it comes to solving student problems. Tell him that you have been trying to work the system, and in the process have worked your way through three advisors...see if he has any suggestions...(of course, you may have already tried this, or god help you, one of the advisors was the dept. head???) Anyway, our thoughts are with you...
