I think Cyberpunk and SteamPunk should have babies.

Aren't they kind of each others' babies already? I dunno exactly what further breeding would really change about either of them. I can't really think of a cyber-ized steampunk, or a steam-ized cyberpunk, that isn't what steampunk is already.

Alternate response: I thought they already did... (http://www.amazon.com/Diamond-Age-Illustrated-Primer-Spectra/dp/0553380966/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-5574201-1068857?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1190243857&sr=8-1)

Diamond Age is About what I was thinking, but I didn't think nearly enough was done with it.

I would like to see something like a combination of China MiƩville's Bas Lag/New Crobuzon with whatever realistic dystopian cyberpunk we can derive from today's headlines. Perhaps NIN's Year Zero, or the seminal Serial Experiments: Lain.

Actually, Lain works as a pretty interesting combination, at certain points, but, again, not enough.

I just don't think I currently have the skill necessary to do it, myself, or I would.

This is what I have been trying, and failing, to write, for years now.

I see more of the extrapolated-now, less of the steampunk, in what you do, but I think that extrapolation works.

Eh. I meant less your first post, and more what this sentence defines, though. The mingled aesthetics, there. I didn't think of Mieville as outright Steampunk until you linked his work with those terms.

Really? I don't think of him as "pure" steampunk, but there are definitely strong fundamentals there.

Which has a different flavour from the 1950's projection-punk, where's-my-jetpack future-stuff that's become popular, recently.

Her name is Image (http://www.livejournal.com/userinfo.bml?user=willowperson)Willow. (http://www.livejournal.com/users/willowperson/)

Well, she's one of them, at least. And even if they don't have babies, I think they need to shag each other rotten.

I think I want to put Cyberpunk's DNA and Steampunk's RNA into a recombination vat, connected to a series of self-aware clockwork machines.

With Nano-steam for blood.
