From [livejournal.com profile] thurisazshole:

So, these used to be a single battery unit. Puncture them, and you'd get acid everywhere. Now they're stacked 394's, which are the standard Small sized watch batteries. Insanely expensive little fuckers, even bought just at the store. They cost about 7 cents from the manufacturers.

Nice, huh?

I wonder why they switched to the stacked button batteries. I can't imagine that it would be cheaper to produce a bunch of small batteries in place of one large one.... Could it be a safety thing?

Actually, the bulk cost for the 394s IS cheaper, as it uses a single sheath of metal, some acid, and very small amount of rubber. The A23's (also known as N-sized batteries) were metal, plastic wrapping, acid, wiring, and whatever else I'm forgetting that goes into a battery. You get the same voltage and charge from the stack of 394s, at a much lower cost.

Strange, isn't it?

Very counter-intuitive, but I'll buy it. And I'll definitely remember this trick!
