From [livejournal.com profile] spiritualmonkey: There are some things that simply disgust me.

I saw we don't need Black/Women's/Native American History month, and this is why. Don't you understand? It's not enough. It's not fucking enough. The violence, the inequality, the sublimated hatred and de facto discrimination is simply not countered by a month of ads on TV and special placemats at McDonalds. It's not changed by a couple of courses at a couple of colleges. The dissaffection the separation the rage and frustration at watching the Facts that women still make less than men, for the exact same job and are constantly told that their bodies are not their own, the fact that African Americacn males are one of the groups most likely to be victims of violent crime, the fact that the people who lived here first are relegated to tiny plots of land wherein they are inundated with alcohol and pornography to keep them complacent, if they have anything left at all.

The piddling shit we do to "make amends" is not enough. People fight. Whether it be along ethninc, ideological, religious, territorial, or survival-based grounds, people conflict with each other, because they don't know how not to. It is in our nature to "compete" for survival... But this is not survival competition. This is self-destruction. This is base, meaningless lines of division, which are then turned in upon themselves to feed upon the internal structure.

"Don't rock the boat." The idea that, if you change things, you are making life difficult, you are being a bad member of the community. What abot the motherfucker killing people, and dealing drugs. Do you think he Really gives a shit about your community? The Neo-Nazi Fuck stomping on people different from him/her? The sexist asshole who wants to "keep them in their place?" Do they care about You? Do they care about your Community?

Your community needs building. Instruction. The lesson, every day, in every form of media, that you can rise past the bullshit killing over an intersection that you don't own, past the glass ceiling, past broken treaties and smallpox infected liquor, past calls of "race-traitor" or "nigger-lover," past the urge to racially profile, past whatever bullshit there is, to something better, something more, something complete in its recognition of the fractal rising of opposition, limitation, struggle, and betterment. That with each new level, there is a different kind of tension and conflict, and not all of it involves killing.

You don't have to fall into this perpetuating cycle. You don't have to be another stereotype. Push the media, become distinct and apart. Do not let this cycle continue, if you want to live, if yoou want to know true justice. If you're going to have to live in human society, for a while, longer, you might as well try to make it completely livable.

This world is fucked to the core. Down to the bedrock. The foundation is cracked and crumbling. And the more you attack it from the outside, the more it caves in on itself, crushes itself, rots itself and festers. Why would you want this to be permanent?

Everyone's a shit. Dr King., Susan B., Malcom X, Mohatma Ghandi, Mother Terresa, Nellie Bly, anyone in the world that you could name who was at all influential probably had parts of themselves that you probably wouldn't like. That doesn't mean that they didn't do good things. Any shit can become less of a shit, and do good things. They can overbalance the shittiness by use of the good works and inspiration to the entire fucking world.

Be Less Of A Shit And Do Good Things.

Or I will fucking Cut you.

I agree. How many different ways can you call to light stuff like this?

First person: Look we are different!
Second person: yes we are and we were wronged!
First Person: We need our own month to remind everyone of it, so that we can feel like amends have been made...
Second person: Thats great, eventually we will get toys at McDonalds and public service annoucements...

Third person: How about we teach everyone about us, show them that we dont want tolerance, but acceptance? Also maybe we should point out the ways the racism has not changed, nor will it ever, and until is goes away we as human beings will never be equal.

First and Second person: But that means we dont get out month, and toys at McDonals...I think we should just take the month....

Why do they go out of their way to point out the differences? Im not saying we are all the same, but throwing in our collective faces doesnt fix things, it widens the gap...

*hugs wolven* from one darkie to another yay us!

It's not even the forced difference that makes me the Angriest, it's the failure to recognise the Very Large Problems, which are making life worse for literally MILLIONS of people.

what no love for a fellow darkie? fine be that way...

I agree, people dont see what is staring them in the face, nor will they. The ones that do are treated like they have the plauge, we are rocking the boat trying to make ppl see the issue. Most people dont want to see the issues, they would rather have the star bucks, eat their granola and read their skewed newspapers than see what is going on.

People do not seeing reality for what it is, real. When its tv its ok, but not when its the really real world.

You know where the love is. Anyway, I've been thinking of a systematic plan to make empowerment and intelligence marketable.

It is easy and inexpensive to declare an "XYZ month", and it quiets the masses for a while. Holidays and official apologies and all this other crap... they're just cheap political brownie points. Nobody wants to tackle real problems because it's too expensive, too controversial, and, above all, too long-term. Our political system is not designed for long-term projects; only projects that can be completed within a term benefit whichever politician begins them.

The efforts of us little people to change the world by ourselves helps, but it's not enough, obviously. The people who need change are weak, or else they wouldn't need it. The people with sufficient power are apathetic; they already have what they need.

At least people are talking about many of these issues. It's the issues that go unspoken that trouble me most. No one talks about the rights of children, subjected to unconstitutional juvenile court proceedings and deplorably little control of their own lives. No one talks about the rights of the mentally ill (or those wrongfully diagnosed with mental illness, I should add), who frequently find themselves on the streets or trapped in the custody of others who take monetary, sexual, or other advantage of them. No one talks about the rights of sex offenders, like pedophiles and rapists, who continue to be persecuted even after serving lengthy sentences that are perhaps already cruel and unusual in themselves, considering the treatment these people typically receive among other inmates; in the meantime, even murderers are spared the equivalent of a sex offenders list.

I would like to point you to China MiƩville's Perdido Street Station and the system of "choice theft."

As for the rest, I think that many people need to be speaking for those who cannot speak for themselves, in certain situations, and the state of the mental health system, in this country, sickens me. So much power given to so few, who employ only one particular rubric of understanding. I hate it.
