If a magical practice continually refuses to work, and consistently doesn't work-- that is to say, does the same something unintended, every time-- then use that practice to attain that new result.

For example: If your work to "shorten the way," and you seem to only make the way longer, then use that technique to increase the length of time or distance. If you are particularly enjoying a midnight conversational stroll, say, or a drive, but cannot take a detour, per se.

Alternately, you could then seek to lengthen your goings (that sounds a bit filty), but that may make for some new and unpredictable results. Opposites do not necessarily beget each other; one action begetting its converse does not mean that an action to attain the converse will necessarily obtain the Verse, as it were.

But it's worth a shot.
