Because thunderstorms do this to me...
Jul. 23rd, 2002 07:44 pmIs It Raining With You?
"Here comes the rain, again,
Falling on my head like a memory,
Fallin' on my head like a new emotion.
I want to walk in the open wind,
I want to talk like lovers do.
I want to dive into your ocean.
Is it raining with you?"
--"Here Comes The Rain, Again" The Eurythmics
She couldn't help calling. She really had no choice. She had to hear that sound, that sweet voice, one more time. She knew she shouldn't do it, but it still felt right. If she didn't call, she'd never be able to forgive herself. The phone rang, once, twice, three times.
"*Click* Hello?"
"Erin? Hi, it's--"
"Sorry, I'm not in, right now, but if you leave your name, number, and the reason you called, I'll get back to you, as soon as possible. Have a good day. *Beep*"
She could only hope the disappointment didn't show, in her voice. "Hi, Erin, it's me, again. I... I don't know why I called.. I wanted to talk, I guess... If i don't hear back from you... well, I guess i'll let it go. Bye."
She hung up the phone and sat there, staring at it, waiting for it to ring. When the rain began falling, she was still wondering why it had gone wrong.
__________
She wasn't going to answer the phone. Never again, if that's what it took. She kept saying she was going to let it go, but she never did. She kept calling back.
She heard the answering machine pick up, and waited to hear what she had to say, this time. Damn Terra, for not leaving her alone. She had made it so that she didn't want to leave the house. She had tried to end it on a good note, and without too much pain, for either of them. There was a time when she still loved Terra. Now she was just afraid of her. She finished her pleading, hollow message, and the machine clicked off.
As it began to rain, she went to the medicine cabinet, and pulled out the bottle of pills.
She wanted to forget how it had all gone so wrong.
__________
As he listened to the patter of raindrops, on the roof, he started a loop of memory, a snippet of the past that he stared at, whenever the moisture in the air decided to obey gravity. He remembered where things had started to get strange.
He had found them both, lying in the middle of the road, and it was 9.38 PM, Thursday night.
The amount of blood, around them, was sickening. How could it have come from only two people? He was about to call it in, when he heard a groan, from one of the prone forms. His eyes went wide, and he rushed over to her, amazed that anyone could have survived this.
"Miss, are you ok?! Is there anything you need?" He didn't move her. He had no idea what may or may not be broken.
"Erin..." The girl was delirious, obviously trying to ask about her friend...
"Ma'am, I'm afraid... I'm afraid your friend's dead." He needed to call this in, to get this girl some help, but he couldn't move. It was as if there was something in him that needed to watch this woman; something that had to see what happened next.
"No..." She was trying to sit up, and her voice was wavering, less now. "No... Not dead... can't be dead." Even as she was crawling over the broken glass, and metal, he couldn't move to stop her. She reached the body, and it began to rain.
"Miss? What are you--?" As she touched the body, there was a flash that might have been lightning. Even to this day, he wasn't sure (He wasn't even sure that it had really happened, at ALL, anymore.) that it wasn't some strange hallucination. But when he looked back to where the two had been, there was nothing. No car pieces, no bodies. Nothing. Or almost nothing. Because all that was left, in the place where he thought he had seen two young women, were two large drops of blood, mingling on the pavement. And those were soon washed away by the rain.
__________
It was dark, where they were, and they clung to each other, like frightened children. Which they were. They were children, they were infants, they were crones. They were all of these things, at once, and the only thing they could see was each other. All of each other.
There, laid out, dissected, and removed, yet still internal and whole, were all of their faults, their follies, their loves and fears, for the other to see. And there was nothing to be done about it. As they clung to each other, they began to fuse with one another. Their souls started to merge, and they were to become one.
The voice was sad, and inexplicably old. "You should not have come here. I'm sorry that this is the way it has to be."
Terra looked over and smiled. "Erin, we can get out of here... Together... We can do anything together... I didn't mean to bring you here, but I couldn't let you die, out there... Anything we want to do. Together." As Terra spoke, their souls intertwined and merged further, and Erin could feel the other girl's essence becoming and changing her own, and she could feel the same happening to her.
She rebelled. "NO!!" As she screamed the word, she ripped and pulled, with everything in her, that was still hers. She rent and tore herself away from the other girl.
She heard that horribly sad, and terribly old voice, one more time. All it said was "I'm so sorry..."
__________
She had woken up in her bedroom. She looked at the clock, on the bedstand, and read 8.46 PM. A furtive glance at her watch told her that it was Thursday. She sat and she waited.
When the phone rang, she would tell Terra that it was over. Would tell her that there was nothing she could say to change her mind, and to please not call her anymore. That would be the end of it.
*Ring. Click* "Hello?"
__________
She was amazed, and hurt, and relieved. She knew that it hadn't been a dream, but it was still almost an hour before everything happened. She felt like there was something missing, but like she had gained so much, as well. She needed to call Erin. She needed to Share...
She was already dialing, with the receiver to her ear. Erin Answered after only one ring. She never did that! She must have felt it, too. That was the only explanation.
"Erin! We need to talk!" She was excited. She knew she probably sounded like a crazy person, but she didn't care. She had to talk to Erin.
"I know Terra. Look... There's something I need to say, so please just let me say it..."
Terra listened.
__________
They sat in their individual houses, listening to the sounds of the weather on their roofs and windows. They remembered an event that never happened, because the people involved, never caused it to happen. They sat, in their own personal reflections, some pulling towards others, others trying to get away. All trying, in their ways, to understand what had happened, to make their lives the way they were.
They had thoughts of each other, and of themselves.
And it was raining.
"So baby talk to me, talk to me
(Like lovers do)
Walk with me, walk with me
(Like lovers do)"
