Can you tell me what they are, without looking at a Bible? Or a Torah? Hell, I don't even want them in order. Just tell me what they Are.

Because I know them, and some conservative Christian Politicians seem to not know them.

1) Thou shalt have no other gods before me, for I am a jealous god.

2) Thou shalt not carve graven images.

3) Thou shalt not take the Lord's Name in vain.

4) Thou shalt remember the Sabbath Day and keep it holy.

5) Honour thy father and thy mother.

6) Thou shalt not murder.

7) Thou shalt not commit adultery.

8) Thou shalt not steal.

9) Thou shalt not bear false witness.

10) Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's ass, wife, house, or other stuff.

Now, really, how long did it take you to remember them, if you did? Did you have to look them up?

How many in the GOP do you think know them, off the top of their heads, let alone, in order? Do you think they know that you can find them in either Exodus or Deuteronomy?

Hm. Scary religiously political thoughts.

A fruitless question: Everyone will answer that they do, as they quote something from Leviticus, while ignoring the rest.

not really fruitless, you can easily judge their understanding. For instance there is a world of difference between killin a man and murdering him.

though for simplicity's sake, most modern Christians aren't advanced enough to understand what they're gettin themselves into.

You running on the Religious Right ticket? Or perhaps the Left reaction? That'd be pretty cool.

See... it's like naming the Seven Dwarves... or any list of something. I always forget one or two. But I can actually name at least 6 or 7 off the top of my head every time. I haven't looked at the list yet, but I'ma go ahead and try. Sorry if I get the phrasing wrong. I know I'll get the order wrong.

1. Honor thy mother and thy father / elders.
2. Do no kill.
3. Do no covet thy neighbors goods.
4. Bare no false witness.
5. Keep the sabbeth holy.
6. Do not covet thy neighbor's wife. (may be part of goods as well)
7. Hold no gods before me (not sure how that's phrased at all...)
8. Do not take the lord's name in vain.

I give up on the rest... I tend to forget. But I didn't really have any form or religious upbringing other than what I got from pop culture, basically. So considering that, I don't think I did half bad. Especially when so many people who should know them don't.

Darn, okay, I had do not steal... but I thought it was part of do not covet thy neighbor's good... So I didn't say it. But considering wife and goods were one and I knew steal, I'ma count both of those for one each. Then again, I thought coveting thy neighbor's wife and adulter would be one in the same more or less, but I was wrong there. Even knowing that, I may not have remembered that adultery was one specifically. And I was way off on graven images. So I'll keep a score of 8 outa 10.

Also, I should have known to phrase them like "Thou shalt not..." Call that one a brain fart.

8/10 is not a bad score, really. Just remember that they were written at a time of a Lot of pagan idolatry, and "fornication." So, to distinguish themselves as God's Chosen, they had to Not Do That.

And brain farts happen. :)

A fair try.

I should have noted that I had an interestingly religious upbringing, but I'd think most people, here, would know that already.

That's not that bad. Just remember, it was originally not to Murder, not just not killing.

funny timing... on the drive back from Florida, we were listening to NPR's "Speaking of Faith" which was all about lying. Then the next show was "This American Life" which was themed with the 10 commandments. So I would have gotten them all, because I jsut heard them all repeatedly last night.

Normally, I forget that worship graven idols and put no god before me are two seperate comandments. so I usually get 9/10 anyway.

Date: 2007-05-08 01:45 pm (UTC)

Yeah, a lot of them seem like they are different parts of the same rule, but they are seperated.

I can get six or seven. But I was raised in a non-religious home, and didn't even encounter the commandments at all until I was 9 or 10.

let's see...

-Thou should have no false Gods before me for I am the Lord
-Honor thy mother and father b/c they are kewl.
-Do not woship craven images
-Thou shall not bear false witness against your neighbor...or anyone really.
-thou should not covet they neighbor's wife...or anyone's really.
-Thou shall not kill or spill the blood of another or s/t like that.
-thou shall do no work on the Sabbath b/c it is sacred and e/t is closed anyway.
-thou shall not mix dairy and citrus b/c thy know it gives them the bad itis
-thou shall support thy local public radio and TV stations as they are poor
-thou shall not pay alot for a cart or camel

...I'm a bit fuzzy on those last three. There could be a problem with the translation from Ancient Hebrew to Modern Capitalism.

with Jesus goading the Pharisees into incanting, "The greatest of the commandments is to love the Lord with all thy being, and the second is like unto it, love thy neighbor like thyself." As such, I ended up mentally tacking that onto the top ten list.

Lessee... bit of a gimme after reading through this one, but I'm adjusting the window so I can't see anyone else's list. Here goes. Yep, failure, I put "graven images" in the same boat as "other gods before me".

No checkin out yo neighbor's shit. You got what you got. If you make yoself sick sayin' you wish you had they stuff, it's yo own damn fault.
No killin'. We got enough death with natural causes to have to worry about murder.
Show respect to the name of the Lord. Would you want someone sayin' they're yo boy if they ain't?
Show respect to the folks. They brought you into this world, they can take you out of it.
Show respect to the day the Lord set aside. Chill.
No coveting yo neighbor's wife's ass, no matter if she got hot pants and the thong peeking over the top. If she ain't yo wife, she got no bidness in yo bed.
No worshipping other gods. How you feel when yo ex's chilluns say, "You ain't my real daddy!"?
No making pictures of other gods. Were you not listening the first time?
No sayin' you saw what you han't. Good way to get shot, and the Lord knows what you saw.
No takin other people's shit. Were you not listening the first time?

... basically it looks like, "Respect Me", "Respect your neighbors", and "Respect yourself". Which ends up tying into the first part with which I got mixed up.

Funny how we can take and use the parts of the bible as we like and discard the rest. My favorite arguement to stir up is commandment #2. Yet we have pictures of Christ and the crucifix and angels all over the damn church and on our persons. This has always been in direct violation of #2 but I'll get burned at the stake everytime I bring it up. Thank God for regeneration.

Date: 2007-05-08 07:36 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] bluesummers.livejournal.com
Well, images of Christ and the crucifix and angels could be reasonably interpreted as A-OK as Christ is the earthly embodiment of God and, when he is worshipped, God is. As for the crucifix and the angels, I don't really know anyone who actually worships the cross - the image of it isn't a target of worship, but a reminder of Christ's hardship. Angels, also, aren't traditionally worshipped in that sense, but regarded as a symbol of heavenly grandeur. I'd be willing to think God's familiar with the concept of metonymy. If you know someone directly worshipping the cross, though, they're Doing It Wrong - and being pretty silly about it. It's a singularly barbaric torture device, after all.

Now where you get into the really sticky situation vis-a-vis Commandment #2 is the subject of Catholicism's treatment of Mary and the Saints, and that's definitely not my department.
