Eventually, I will, again, post something that is very long, very complex, and layered, from my headspace.

It Will Not Place It Behind A Cut, For Those Reasons.

My long posts are long because they mean a lot to me, the Thoughts mean a lot to me. I'm not going to fucking Hide them.

This is not directed at anyone, in particular, save the kind of troll who would post, in all seriousness-- or a misguided sense of "irony"-- "too long; didn't read." I've seen too many people concerning themselves with whether people are going to do this to them, recently. Listen, Trolly McGee. If you didn't read it then Thbbbpppt! and Jog On.

The End.

I don't think it's actually an issue with readability. Placing things behind a cut is usually done to free up space on a friend list. I don't always do it myself, but that's usually on my other LJ where I don't post a lot. Same reason people put pictures behind a cut - so they don't crowd others' Flist. I have 70 people on my list and I usually have to go to some rare posters individual pages to make sure I didn't miss anything because all it takes is three people making along entry with no cut and I only see about five people on my flist.

Personally I don't mind either way, but it's a nice gesture having nothing to do with "hiding" your entry. That's what filters are for!

Pictures, memes, some things that will be obnoxiously huge, or clashy, even lyrics, yeah. I'll cut them, because... It's correct to do so. Not much by way of content, other than to merely amuse.

But, like I said, I've recently seen an influx of the 'net speak "tl;dr," or "too long; didn't read." It's become a piece of accepted, and in some spheres encouraged rudeness, and I'm tired of seeing it.

Also, I don't do the filters, personally; though I don't have a problem with the idea, per se.

"too long; didn't read."

My response to that is usually something along the lines of "get the fuck off my friendslist, then".

Precisely.

"....all it takes is three people making along entry with no cut and I only see about five people on my flist."

But LiveJournal automatically shows a specific number of entries on each friends list page. If you've set it to show 20 entries, for example, then it will show exactly 20 entries, even if every single one of them is excessively long.

sorry I meant how many I see on a screen. Yes, I can scroll endlessly (and I usually do) to see all twenty entries, but it's a looooong damn scroll sometimes. Like I said, I don't particularly mind, but I can see how some people do. The point was I don't think it's a matter of reading or not reading (I always read entries, just maybe not right away if they're long) I think it's just a matter of screen time. If I see cuts for length, I will make a mental note to go back and look at them and give them my full attention later; since I KNOW it's long, I assume it's important and probably rather personal, thus I'd rather focus on the entry alone, rather than see it in context of a Flist.

Ah, I misunderstood you. Thanks for clearing it up.

I personally dislike it when people put text behind cuts. It just means more clicking I have to do. Clicking (and then later hitting the back button) because you want to read something is much more inconveninent than scrolling because you want to skip something. If I have a lot to read, I won't even bother reading anything that's behind a cut, as I figure it must not be that important if the owner decided to hide it.

(I do prefer large pictures and bad HTML to be behind cuts, though, as those screw with the layout of my friends page.)

I guess I'm the opposite: I figure it must be REALLY important if it's asking for isolated scrutiny. I never, until now, considered a cut tag "hiding"

interesting...

Hehehe, it's funny how completely differently two people can approach the same thing.

If someone's actually a big enough dick to whine about the length of your posts-with-content when they're reading them out of their own free will, they need to be harshly reminded of 1. manners and 2. the page down key is RIGHT FUCKING THERE. Sheesh...

Generally, yeah. I just want to try to stem the flood of internet dickery.

Futile as that may seem.

It's too bad LJ doesn't allow editing of comments, because I've seen disemvoweling work wonders on Making Light.

Otherwise, I suggest a reminder not to be a jerkface and a freezing of the comment thread. That's usually worked pretty well for me.
