warren_ellis' Saturday Night Open Mic
Apr. 29th, 2007 01:41 amIt is no longer Saturday Ninght, for either of us, but why the fuck not?
Pissing me off, today, is the idea that, because we know [a famous person] through [their] works (Jesus said it was cool), our wanting to know [them] is any less genuine. If all I knew was [their] thoughts and Ideas, I'd want to talk to [them] more. Fuck a bunch of fame.
What's pissing me off is the trend, within the Academic Study of Magic, to glom onto older disciplines, such as anthropology or religious studies in order that we may have "greater credibility." Don't get me wrong, I think that the academic study of magic can gain a lot from the methods of those older disciplines, but I've seen what happens to the new kid, when it finally feels the need to jump out of the shadow of its older brother.
Religious studies grew up out of both theology and philosophy, and now it denies both, only holding on to the methods of psychology, anthropology, and sociology....
Bah.
I want to be the person that finally gets people to realise the interconnected framework of various disciplines, allowing each to learn from and grow out of each other. I was thinking about changing that to "one of the people who," but that's not as true. I want to do it. Being deeply involved in it would be great, but I want my fucking name on a plaque, and a holiday in my honour. I deserve it.
I want to invent a super-position system, so that I can make a super-position knife and baseball bat. You know why.

Date: 2007-04-29 07:13 pm (UTC)Yeah, this... they're still people, and as likely to have a conversation as anyone.
As for the rest...you know how I feel about your department(s) and their need for a proctologist.
