Belly - [Feed the Tree (Remix)]--- I finished Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, today, and it was everything I had hoped for. That's rare, and very surprising, for me, in a book: to wish for something, expect something completely else (even if I'm unsure as to what that Else may be), and to get the thing for which I wished.

Save Ferris - [Come On Eileen (Dexie's Midnight runners Cover)]--- The entire last half of the book was masterfully written, and the subtextual content was wonderfully phrased.

It is a book about magic, wonder, mystery, awe, respect, and the finding of oneself, inside and outside of the destiny set for you. It is, in short, a book about nearly everything I wish to see in the world.

My favourite quote in the book: "This is the genius of my enemy! Lock a door against him and all that happens is that he learns first how to pick a lock and second how to build a better one against you!"

kidneythieves - [Amnzerø]--- Genius, precisely as it should be, but I'll not spoil it by giving you the context. Yes, you heard me. One of the lessons I took from the book... Sometimes the lack of a thing is more powerful than the thing, for the finding of it...

The Martinis - [Free]--- Still parsing a lot of the book's material, but... Hmm.

We shall see.

Other than that, saw a bunch of apartments, today, and we seem to have narrowed it down to two places. One is really pretty cheap, but a bit cramped-feeling, and the other is a bit more expensive, but more spacious. (VNV Nation - [Entropy]). As WinAmp so wryly segues, the only problem is that we'd be among the youngest 20% of the community's population. So, again, we shall see.

Hm.

One of my favorite books currently. I've recently found and reread it. As you said, very well written. You should check out the Ladies of Grace Adieu, a sort of companion book by her as well.

I'll check it out, but I'm still processing this. I'll have to re-read it, most certainly, but i'll give it a month or two.

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is indeed a wonderful book. It really struck me how well she integrated actual history with this alternate reality, and made the alternate bits of history feel as crunchy and solid as actual history. Not to mention all of the interesting undercurrents...

It took the author 10 years to write, and no wonder! I imagine the level of research she had to do into the history to make it work so well took up huge amounts of time.

WOW. I had no idea that it took her that long. But I completely understand it, thinking about the fact that it is a three-volume alternate magical history of Napoleanic Europe...

Wonderful book.
