I feel like there is definately missing the perspective I'm trying to impart.

I feel like whenever i'm told not to do something, the person speaking doesn't understand that their saying not to is why i feel I need to.

I keep getting told to do something I can deal with, for a year (or thereabouts), but then they rip those things from me, in the process.

So what is to be done?

Suck it up and do something shite, in order to get done?

Press forward, and try to shove it through?

Something else?

I don't have anyone to talk to about this, in the departments, anymore. Not really. Dr. Dwyer's in the hospital, and no one else really hears me when I talk. They hear "Magic" and then seem to think "Shit! Get him off the subject!"

So we'll see, won't we?

Need a cigarette.

Wish I knew what to say.

I know people around me would tell me "Cooperate and graduate! then do what you want" and usually for like high-school or even undergrad stuff I'd give the same advice, but here seems stickier.

The problem is that I keep hearing that: Put it off, now, do what you want later. Doesn't make it easy, that's for sure.

maybe find a different expression? "magic" is rife with many meanings, none of which translate into "take me seriously" - sad but true. If you want to try to get more support for the projects you want ot do, compromise by defining your terms in more acceptable ways.

Which is precisely the problem. I want to show that magic is undeserving of the current connotations, the current modes in which academia tends to think of it.

There is only so much compromise before your message is completely lost.

You're being stubborn about a word? dude, that's just silly. If "magic" makes them cringe and run away, then use a different word. If your aim is to prove the idea and practice has an undeserved reputation, then start the ball rolling by using a different term, show it's acceptability then link it in a series of logical steps to the unsavory term. Good grief, I thought you were upset that they don't accept the belief and practice not that they won't hear the word itself. If they don't like your language choice, choose another. It sounds to me like your whole task is to unstain the image of Magic not the word "magic" - consider in any case that the term applies to chicanery and illusion. I myself rarrely used the term "magic" or even "magick" - there are many others that are more approachable. After all, you wouldn't use the term "rape" when describing an object being stripped down to it's essentials and taken by force? The term is too connotative and has been changed in useage out of consideration for the unsavory associations to it, even though the technical definition of it remains exactly the same and could conceivably be used to describe an action that does not involve a human being

Know what your war is and dont' get sidetracked by obstinate pride into digging a rut where you don't need one. If you persist, you won't get anywhere. Use another term.

It's the term and practice as well as the word.

You should know, by now that it's never "just a word," for me. The word has connotations and meanings built into the creation of the thing, and i believe that those should be respected.

The term is linked to the practice, they need to see and accept that. if necessary I will use a different term only long enough to make them see that by accepting it under a new made up term and not the original, designated one, they are being inconsistent and illogical.

My thesis is about magic, and it won't not be.
