Reached in conversation with mech_angel: We need a system of moral custard: something that is hard and rigid, when impacted upon, or put in situations requiring moral Rules, and fluid in situations of flexibility and nuance.

Perhaps "Ethical Whiffle Ball," might be more appropriate. It functions for everything you need but the harder you push on it the less likely it is to do your bidding.
