Auf der Maur - [Lightning is My Girl]--- Found via [livejournal.com profile] scarletmagdalen: One man's take on What the "Left Behind" Series Really Means.

This is a stark and disturbing picture of American Fundamentalism. I wish I could say that it was surprising, to me, or that I didn't know it was or could be this way.

Auf der Maur - [Followed the Waves]--- The worst thing, in the current climate (political, religiuos, human), is the hypocrissy.

Read it.

OK, that's it. I'm going to start writing my 'Atheist's Vs The Endtimes' book.
*rolls up sleeves*

Too reactionary. I think we just need to loudly yell for some tolerance, and kick the shit out of any who won't do as we say... Yeah... Yeah, that'll do...

The best bet: Don't attach names, and just list attributes, and things done by the groups, let them assume the worst, and then BAM! "No, fucker, it's YOU I meant."

Did you read "The Maid's Tale"?

If the liberals can't save the U.S. who will - big money's interest in enough stability to make more money?

Never read it. Will have to look into it, thanks.

Money can be made in any climate, and it's not necessarily about the money. Many times it's about the feeling the money gives: "I'm better and more exclusive" kind of thing.

Damn, where's my thoughts. Meant "The Handmaid's Tale", naturally...

Ah. I thought that might be waht you meant, but was un sure. Still, no. Meaning to read it, but i've not much by way of time.

The only Atwood work I've read, thus far, is "Oryx and Crake."

Beautiful work, but the tale is even more disturbing...

I will be watching from abroad, thank you.

Yup.

Brilliant article. I'm glad someone finally said it.

Exactly.

You know, watching from abroad might not do it. There are plans to quarantine in a sense Pakistan's nuclear arsenal should a Islamist take-over happen - are there any such plans for the U.S. should the Christian fundamentalists take over and decide to hasten the Rapture a bit?

Very good point. There are safety measures allegedly in place to safeguard our nuclear system from "unauthorized" use, but from this particular threat I'd guess not, for of a combination of reasons... the wackos being in power at the moment, and, as mentioned in the article, the inability of the more liberal segments of the country to take this threat seriously.

Personally, I'll be watching from a country generally regarded by the fundie freakazoids as an ally (another example of their tenuous grasp on reality, and ignorance of anything outside their home states.) Also, from there, potentially ending up in a country that most Americans probably couldn't even point out on a map, but happens to have the highest chance of survival from nuclear fallout.

I proabably wouldn't be so quick to abandon ship, but I've got a kid to think about, and, to throw a popular catchphrase back at 'em...I certainly don't want my precious little angel exposed to THAT kind of thing!

I am actually wondering where the fallout would likely be least. New Zealand? Brazil? I've been thinking about both for emigration.

Geographically speaking, New Zealand is the safest as far as fallout and also probably distance from potential targets. This is according to some studies my husband read, not long after he got back form living in NZ, i think. It has something to do with their location in the middle of the Pacific (and the projected fallout patterns worldwide,) the fact that they're an island country and all that that entails, and that they're big enough to be self-sustaining without being big enough or political enough to bother bombing.

And nuclear-free zone which has always appealed very much to me.

when i was married, my ex wife was fascinated by these books. i read them after she did, of course, and had widely skewed views of what was going on in them.

we started having discussions about them, and quickly she turned them into arguments, and saying how evil and vile my beliefs are..

yeah. its definatly propaghanda thats NOT going anywhere good. i just hope they don't start the witch hunts again, ya know?

yeeesh. It makes me wonder how someone even sort-of associated with that kind of thing became my best friend. And how we aren't still in/haven't been reverted back to the dark ages.

Because not all of those people are insane. Some people remember that the Core of Christianity (i.e. the Christ's teaching) had more to do with loving and accepting people, no matter what, than it had to do with smitting people.

Different people just found different accoutriments to it, such as snake handling, and prophecy.

Then there are the vocal minority who hold to strict literal interpretations of Hebraic law, ignoring most of the things Jesus said, and calling themselves Christians.

Indeed. It was Paul who really taught me to love Catholics. Definately one of those Not Insane Christians.

err...not about his religion, anyway.

if it wasn't for my mother, who taught me what catholoscism (i spelled that one wrong for sure) really is - by way of her actions and voice.. i'd have a different view of them as a whole, otherwise. she is one of the few that embrace everything that is, and understands that hope is a wonderful thing in regards to "others"... to this day, she still hopes that people will understand their path sooner or later, while realizing that it is them alone that must find it.

her actions and words alone have brought hope to me - hope that others will stop being fake to themselves so they can be true to others as well.

then she steps out of that religious hat, and becomes the woman everyone else sees. to sum THAT one up, my father says "i wake up to a different woman every day." in various contexts..
