I had a similer idea a while back. What if we put rows of tiny little windmills alongside highways. Each one would generate a tiny little bit of energy, but collectively...
Actually it would probably be more effective to channel the wind created by passing vehicles down wind tunnels first, or soe sort of corkscrew worm type drive to generate electricity.
yeah...same idea about a year, maybe three, ago. Problem being the "nano"-ness of the tech needed. Most likely more energy involved in producing than what they would generate. Except I was focusing on cities: what if you put them on the external walls of buildings in major cities? Little nano-turbines spinning in the wind, turned by the passing of buses, the peeing of hobos, the careless rake of a stick across the wall by a child.... Too much damn trouble though. This idea is similar, but actually feasible. I heard about it a week ago and thought along the same lines.
I heard something similar a few years ago about the coolest science-fair project ever: wave-generators about the size of a gallon jug. String enough of them together and get the power you need. But yeah, I never thought about footstep vibrations.
The only weirdness is if you're really a worrywart and want to wonder what's going to happen when all the wind or water power is harvested... if all this energy goes into pushing windmills, eventually the fluid will become static... hmm...

I have too many ideas.
