Eostre of the Dawn
Mar. 31st, 2002 04:16 pmRadiohead - [Just]--- Today, in Christian Culture (if such a thing can be said), is Easter. Easter is, supposedly, the day when Jesus arose from the Grave after the crucifixion. Easter, most assume, is for the Rising Son (Har. Har.), as the Sun, rising in the east. "A most logical supposition," as Mr. Wednesday said. But it is wrong.
Tori Amos - [Caught a Light Sneeze]--- Easter is the name that was given to Eostre of the Dawn, the "Pagan" goddess of Spring, Fertility, and Rebirth. Her totems are Eggs, Rabbits, ducks, and candies. As a method of hailing her, people would hunt for hidden eggs, and give each other candy, and flowers, and trinkets. They would wear flowers in their hair, and around their necks and wrists. She asked of no sacrifice, save that people be joyful, and happy, and caring of one another. And Food. Lots of food.
Now, in today's "Pagan Friendly" society, there are hundreds of thousands, potentially millions of people who claim to be pagan, or Wiccan, or heathen, or what-have-you. (Hoobastank - [Crawling In The Dark]) In that multitude, how many do you think know the true origin of the word, and how many do you think denounce Easter as "That X-ian shit I tried to escape with my way out, wacky paganism."? There are precious few of the former, but they are gaining.
Nine Inch Nails - [Closer (Super Mario remix)]--- A few fun facts: Alexander of Macedon, as he conquered the known world, ran into a force more powerful than even he: Christianity. He was baptized into the church, and began converting, as he conquered. He ran into a great many obstacles, as he tried to convert, so he had to make the transition a bit easier. He started taking the rituals of the Church, and merging them with the rituals of the cultures he encountered. Christmas, Easter, and parts of Jesus, himself, were taken from other cultures (December 25 is actually the birth date of the Mithras. Sacrificial Martyr. Look him up.).
Slipknot - [Wait and Bleed]--- So, while you "Pagans" may denounce these things as "Christian Bullshit,) i urge you to take a closer look at them. Perhaps re-acquaint yourselves with the deeper traditions... Maybe get a little pissed off, and take them back, even. Or, better yet, share the knowledge. Understand the traditions. Tell People.
It's the easiest way to make them see. Merry Eostre, and Day Dream Well
