1000 Chips Delicious....
Feb. 25th, 2002 01:25 am................. Uhm...... School, as a mechanism for turning out people with the same Knowledge base, Sucks. Just look at Pink Floyd's The Wall. Columbine. That other one that happened more recently whose name i don't remember cause i don't CARE any more... People don't learn, when forced. They take the infor, for fear of reprisal, but it MEANS nothing. If you're only trying to make it so people remember dates, but don't give them a reason to rmember, then it's all pointless.
We worry so much about keeping the scholarship, making the grade, winning approval, Getting The Answer Right... We forget about Learning. Questioning. Asking WHY... It's useless... we spend nerve-wracking years at school, under someone else's Deadline-Pushing, Grade-Dispensing Thumb, and we rarely ever actually get the chance to learn.. so rare is it that someone says "i'm teaching you this because this is the way This Society sees it. There's something Equally as interesting over here. Let's look at this, shall we?" That is rare, and beautiful.
Someone pointed out something True, tonyte... Just as i always say, it's useless, untill it Comes From You, the same is entirely true for teaching. Unless the teacher does it for the love of teaching and wanting to learn from the students, as well, then it's all rote and dates and numbers and no whys or wherefores. You don't care, the BOOK certainly doesn't care, and the students don't care... Why are you teaching? If you don't care, go home and find another job.
One of my favourite fortune cookies said to me: "The Best Teacher is Also A Student." That is so true, but not where i feel like going with this. i somply wanted to put it out there. No, where i want to go is this: Teaching, in my opinion, shouldn't be about the grade, or the school board, or even "The Material." For me, Teaching is about Learning. Expansion of knowledge, wisdom, and Growth. Learning all the psosible sides of a story, in order that oyu may come to your own conclusions. *sigh* i'm lacking direction, in this rant... Tid-Bits of info:
For any of you wondering "What gives you the right to go off on this subject?? i mean, it's not like you've ever been a teacher...." Well, actually, i have. In my senior year in high school, i taught a 6th &7th grade class. It was mainly a literature class, but we went whereever there was anything to learn. Gestalt, and all that... So i've been there. i know what it's like to come in, on days, and not want to teach. You know what i did, then? i made them teach me things. Tell me stories. That's how i learned From them and about them. And it was enjoyed by all... *heavy sigh*
i guess my problem is, i'm sick of people not Seeing their options. Not not Having them: not Seeing them. Not seeing the ability to simply Leave a class, not seeing the ability to ask any question, or go whereever they want, or Be Themselves. i want people to not Fear the professor's approval or reprisal. i want professors to act out of Quality, and not out of "Well I like This, so if they Don't, they Fail. Moo hoo ha ha." That's petty. How about "I like This, so if they Don't, let me see what i can learn from them...", Hm? Ever think of that? And this isn't only to teachers, cause i don't think any of you who read this are teachers, in the professional sense. This is to every one of you, out there. Because you're ALL Teachers, in the Realistic sense.
Good Nytes. Good Days. Dream Well
