wolven7As a child of 1980's Washington, DC, I dislike the "WHO ARE YOOUU?!" conspiracy thriller plots, on basic principle. This whole False Flag, attack the prinicpal in order to create a sense of insecurity and fear among those you're trying to manipulate and control thing? We've seen it. You don't need to drag out the "OMG, did he really do that?! And who are THOSE people?! Oh NOES! CONSPIRACY!!!!!!!111!21123qw435q54rq," because I know it's a conspiracy. We all know it's a conspiracy, we all know the players involved, and their base motivations: Protecting Those They Love, and/or the status quo. I get it. Is it so much to ask that we get on with it, so we can see some actual characterisation and playing around with the facts of the world?
Also, there are several TV tropes i can't stand: Unecessary secrets are one we've talked about, but there's also the one of the immediate adoption and use of Specific Terms or Designations, by people who have no reason to use them. Examples include "Rebel" in season three of Heroes; "The Others," in Lost; and "The Event," in The Event. It rings hollow disingenuously ominous, as if the writers are trying to add weight to this thing, this idea, and it Is Not Working.
And it's so easy to Not do this. All it takes to fix it is to have one character outside of the people who came up with the designation scoff at this codeword bullshit. "These So-Called Others," or something to that effect. Real reactios to codenames, rather than people simply accepting these definite article attributions, these oh-so-weighty ideas. See the opener to this season's Fringe, and an outsider's perspective on the name "Walternate."
But I'm probably the only person who gets that bothered by that kind of thing.
Made a kick-ass meatloaf alst night. Tarragon, salt, pepper, Worchetershire sauce, A-1, barbecue, soy, basil, oregano, one egg, panko crumbs. Delicious. I should make this, more often.
Anyway.

On dumb tropes:
A lot of things billed as romantic comedies these days... aren't. They're about petty, vengeful people who cannot communicate and somehow, inexplicably, stay together. I do not understand this.
