Last night, [livejournal.com profile] unknownbinaries, [livejournal.com profile] lord_of_smoking, [livejournal.com profile] beard and I went to go see Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim or, as I have subtitled it, "How I Learned To Stop Being A Reprehensible Emo Douchebag And Take Responsibility For My Own Life."

It was a thing of Pure, Unmitigated Joy.

Do you like video games? Go see this movie.

Do you like making pop-culture references, with your friends? Go see this movie.

Do you like well-choreographed fight scenes? Go see this movie.

Ever wanted to tell a hipster his hair was stupid and have him explode? Go see this movie.

Have you ever been so obsessed with someone that you lost all track of time, all sense, all reason, all proportion of where you were and what you were doing, until you managed to talk to them, see them, be near them again, until something finally clicked, and you realised something VERY important about yourself?

Then you. Need. To go. See. This. Movie.

Everyone has baggage. If you think you don't have some baggage, then you've very likely got serious and deep baggage. Scott Pilgrim VS The World is a movie about what happens when we stop denying our bullshit, stop running from it, and instead face it, head-on. It's about growing the hell up, in the only way that matters: Taking Personal Responsibility For Your Life Choices.

And it does all of this in a frame that is fun, funny, witty, and somehow realistically human while being completely ridiculous and cartoonish, all at the same time. Defeated enemies turn into points and coins. All the villains are amazing. EVERYONE has superpowers. It's a fun and kind of touching story about not being a douche.

Go see Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World. I think you'll be very happy that you did.

[EDIT 2.58pm: Also, Widgett's Wayhomer Review sums this up pretty nicely, as well: http://www.needcoffee.com/2010/08/14/scott-pilgrim-world-wayhomer-review ]
