I've actually been thinking a lot about procrastination, lately. My new tactic toward it is actually "when you feel the urge to procrastinate on something, instead immediately do that thing." It means that you don't spend time thinking and fretting about bullshit, and have more time for the things you really want to do. The urge to procrastinate, here, turns into a little alarm bell, signaling "Time To Study German," or "Time To E-Mail Investors," or whatever it is that you were considering putting off.
You make a list, you stick to it, and you use the urge to push yourself forward. It's a weird little inversion, but it works.
So far as social connectivity goes, it keeps you from missing opportunities to hang out with people, or not having the time to have a conversation, because the other things you may have had to do? They're done. The more we allow ourselves to put of fthe things that must be done, the more we'll worry and seek to avoid, because so much time keeps building up, and we think that people will be angry with us, or that we'll have missed a window of opportunit, so why not just say "fuck all that," and just get the fucking thing over with. Do the work, and it'll be done, and you won't have it hanging over your head. Fill the day with small, timed put-offs, and maybe it'll go easier.
I came to this mode of behaviour, because I was sick of people not believing me when i said I was going to do something. The fact of the matter is, when I say I'm Going To Do Something, In X Time Frame, far more often than not, I will do it, in that time frame. If time gets away from me, or other projects get in the way, I amend that time frame, and move on. So, in an effort to shut everyone the fuck up about it, I make the distinction clear, and stick to my word.
And so it goes.
